Default What do you think of Napster?

Just wondering what the general concensus is about napster/macster and free music downloads ect?
I was against it at first but ......... what the hell, free is free. I've spent my "unfair" share on CD's over the years.

Any opinions?

It's a cool, simple, easy to use, and completely criminal way to download a variety of music.

In the long run does it hurt or encourage legitimate sales of music? Probably both.

It's generated alot of free publicity for Lars and Metallica.

Can it be stopped? Kinda hard to stuff the Genie back in the bottle, but the labels ought to be able to figure out a way to use it as a revenue stream for single sales of older catalog stuff.

I published a rant on this recently - it spells the death-knoll of our industry as we know it - if anyone wants it email me.

All the record industry has to do
to nip this problem in the butt is to
drastically drop CD prices. Greed will
be the only major obstacle from saving
this industry,as the way we know it.

The long legacy of music biz greed is what fuels 'rebels' to continue breaking copywright laws.
Brandy and cigars for those who have made their money, chaos and a fight for survival for the rest of us.

yeah, that and get their head out of their collective ass long enough to realize that downloadable music is a product that can potentially make them a ton of money if they're smart about it. But they won't be smart about it, so I don't know why I even bother...

Personally I like it. If i need a quick hook of a song not in house most times i can find it. My question is this though. If I have an album from 20 years ago and would like to put on cd, if I find a a good 256k/320k rate mp3 and want to burn is that legal? What is the difference whether I choose to clean up my album spending hours on it or finding it off the net. Did I not purchase the use of that song as long as it is for personal use?

Unless of course it is the Steely Dan Remasters , then I'll go buy them!
