Not paying the yearly Avid tax
I know - another post talking about not renewing the yearly update/support plan ($199). It's not that I'm dissatisfied with PT - far from it. But running an unsupported operating system - High Sierra - is only part of the equation. Yeah I'd need a new video card that has Metal support so I could go to a more modern OSX but that's in the neighborhood of $800 or so and that's money I don't have. I'd rather put that money into Superior Drummer and a pair of expansion libraries. Or a better audio interface.
Besides if I do update to a newer OSX I have compatibility with current ones with PT 2021.6. Same thing if I get a newer machine. There's not really much in the way of features that I would want or need in a newer version of PT. ARA - don't need it. Keep in mind that I'm not a big operation and I don't do post. The odd video work I do do is forensic and not creative. |

Re: Not paying the yearly Avid tax
Good for you, Jack. I let it expire too.
I'm staying on v2020 and I'm not expecting to miss much in the way of "upgrades". Looking forward to the really great things to come in the way of mac computers in the coming years. And if Avid never gets on the boat with ARM RISC processors, I'm totally ready to dump PT completely. Over twenty years, I've used PT, but all things must pass… If they do tag along, I'll consider subscription. I'm actually seeing now, as I'm incorporating my new SSL UC1 plugin-controller, and eliminiating mouse-on-screen-mixing as much as possible, that I could do without Protools quite easily. A page-turner that; UC1. I'm more or less finished with mixing with a mouse. Of course, each to their own. I'm retired and mostly just enjoying mixing old stuff over again, and occasionally collaborating with friends, so that's my viewpoint.

If AVID ever ... utilizes all CPU cores properly and puts processor affinity back into the code (like it used to be several versions ago), I might get current again.

Re: Not paying the yearly Avid tax
When I retired from doing commercial projects, I retired from paying for the yearly support plan. Froze at 2018.7 though currently running a very stable 2018.3 under Win 7. No regrets whatsoever.

Re: Not paying the yearly Avid tax
After looking at the underwhelming bug fixes/new features in 2021.7 I think I made the right decision. I know I have a grace period but not giving that serious thought.
