Default ELASTIC AUDIO Thumbs Down with Multi Track Drums

Hello All. Possibly someone can suggest a better way then what I have been trying for a few days.

I have been messing with multitrack drums and Elastic Audio quantize.
I have tried every algorithm with these and they all mess up or phase the top end of the cymbals.

I have found the best is to be on all the shell drums.. use RHYTHM... and on the Overheads.. room or far mikes use POLY.. Even with this.. When I check against a playlist that has no elastic audio on it... things are phasing with Elastic audio.

I have tried every combination with this and still came up with un satisfactory results. I am checking it in succession with Logic X Flex time using the Slicing option. This has WAY BETTER results... however there are no playlists to easily swap back and forth on...

Any suggestions anyone that has done extensive testing as I have.. I am coming up with a loss, and possibly will have to go and learn beat detective. Once again I am not comparing the both, just was trying to get Elastic Audio to work without top end phasing on the cymbals, hats etc. but have failed

Unfortunately, that's your answer. I myself would never user EA on a multi track kit.

Easy. Use X-Form in Pro Tools 7.4. The iZotope Radius algorithm was set way better set in that version. Pro Tools 8+ X-Form = rubbish. Fix it, please, Avid, this is an easy fix on your end!

Well I guess we are mostly on 12.5.1 now.. Its too bad. In prince-able it works... but to the ears it just does not cut it.

Are you grouping the clips as opposed to grouping the tracks? Select clips and group(found in one of the menus), then do your quantizing trying Rhythm, Polyphonic or whatever. It'll probably still phasey but worth a try if you haven't grouped the tracks.

Yes I had this discussion on here a few years ago with other users, though I can't find the topic at the mo

I also came to the conclusion that using Beat Detective results in much better fidelity (especially on the overheads track) compared to elastic audio, no matter what algorithm is used.

This is going to cause problems. You need to group the tracks and use the same algorithm on each track or you will invite trouble.

Elastic Audio is far from perfect with many types of audio. I have used it on drums, even quite recently as it is far quicker than Beat Detective and easier to work with. However, the later usually yields much better results, certainly no phase issues! It of course has it's own difficulties.

Agreed with the other posters here. Avid, bring back the Elastic Audio of old (7.4?) with its stellar quality!

Stephen
