Default Will this build work with 6.4?

I've decided the A7n8x deluxe with sata drives combo is not compatible with PT on my 001. Here is what I think I want to upgrade to:

-Athlon 64 FX-55
-Asus A8v

old stuff

-WD raptor 36gb sata
-2x 1gb patriot DDr400 matched ram

I decided on a socket 939 solution because that way I don't have to buy new ram (DDR2), video card, UAD cards, or have to upgrade my digi (All PCI-E). I want to stick with DDR and PCI / AGP for a while. I think this setup will give me enough power and probably be functional when I upgrade digi / pt. It should also be cheap (<100$). However, given the living 6042 hell and plugin twilight zone I've been in with the nforce2 ultra, I want to make sure this will work. I think those earlier problems were caused by the fact that the nforce2 ultra's SATA is done by a RAID chip that can't be turned off without disabling all sata. Will that again be a problem? Thanks.

Looks like the A8V used the same chipset as the K8V which was possibly the most popular single core AMD build ever. You might search the DUC with A8V and see what pops up but I suspect you will be fine.

Wouldn't post without seaching. There's a phenomenon, especially in that desktops sticky, where the questions I have have been asked but nobody has responded. Given that, and I'm leaning this, pro tools is SO incredibly finicky, I wish there were more concrete answers out there, like "you can't have processor X with chipset Y because of Z."

I have an A8V Deluxe Socket 939 MB, AMD 64x2 4800, 2 gb of RAM, an ATI AGP Video Card and 3 SATA drives. Works quite well with PT LE 7.3.1cs7 and my 002R.

For the 001 and 6.4 a single core socket 939 AMD should be fine. You will need 6.4cs6 AND 6.4cs9 AND the latest PACE drivers. Windows XP SP3 should also be fine.

I'm sure Sunburst will agree that using Acronis True Image Home to back up your system, ie make images, of a working Windows install before loading on Pro Tools - you were going to do a clean XP install, yes? - and an image of your working PT LE install would be a wonderful idea.

Cheers,

Good to hear from you. If only I was switching from a WORKING system...haha. I just hope this works. I want to make music not research compatibility. Thanks all, and if anybody has run a K8T800 pro board with 6.4 chime in.

Now I'm really confused (and it isn't because I'm drinking beers while screwing around with this absolute PITA!!). I was just tweaking the BIOS, disabled the floppy and AGP fast paging (or something like that. Heard it was causing someone's 6042s). The digi 001 card moved itself to it's own IRQ all of a sudden...yay. Things were a lot better, I could load most of my not too intensive UAD plugs and multitask to a fair degree. Wasn't 6042ing on start-up like it used to. Still crashed if I tried to do too much, but a lot better. Well, now I've got to weigh my options. I've also been a reading a lot of old Allen Hallada stuff about how overkill with 001 and 002 actually led to worse performance...don't know what to do now, downgrade or upgrade!

Hopefully, to clarify, downgrading wasn't a serious option. But I am now very very wary of taking any upgrade, not only for stability, but performance reasons.

Your mileage may vary, but I find UAD to be very unstable with the 6.4/001 generation. Users here with newer versions of PT report success, but after quite a bit of fussing, I only use my UAD plugs outside of Pro Tools.
Having said that, I rely pretty heavily on a few of my UAD plugs with the 001/Cubase combination. No issues.

Good luck-

I just got my card yesterday, so I'm sure it's not causing the trouble. In fact, they seem to be working fine, or at least my fingers are crossed the problems don't come out of the woodwork.

JMS40, I see you are running 6.4/001 with a K8M800 (that is the integrated graphics version of the k8t800, correct?) What mobo? Are you running sata? Is the sata go through the PCI bus? is it rock solid? Faster than what you had before? I have determined my problems were being caused by my SATA chip using the same PCI bus as the 001, until they luckily disambiguated themselves. Now I'm still considering an upgrade just for more power...
