New Mac Pro Rendering Speed
Hi,
has anyone experience with a new MacPro compared to a Trashcan regarding Audio Suite rendering. I am very happy with my Trashcan 6core performance wise. The only thing is that I feel that rendering times could be faster. Like when editing dialogue for example there are loads of tiny rendering jobs accumulating over the day, like declicking, denoising, RX connect transferring etc. Or offline bouncing is i.e. 6x. Still 10 Minutes rendering per hour of program. My thought is that these rendering times add up to considerable amount each week and when the new machines are like a lot faster this could pay off some day. It wouldn't really be worthwhile the investment if rendering was lets say only doubly as fast. But it would if it were like five times faster in studio reality. Thoughts? |

Re: New Mac Pro Rendering Speed
I have a new Mac Pro (16 core) but didn't ever have a trashcan.
I can run some tests for you, assuming I have the right plugs - I just own PT standard, using 2021.3 at the moment but can go back to 2019. I have almost all the UAD plugs too, but very little else. If you want to DropBox some files and a session and tell me what you want to try I can time it. |

-Create a Session 48kHz/24Bit bwf wav -Create Stereo Track -Make a selection with Length 30 Minutes -Open Audio Suite D-Verb default preset, (create continuous file/entire selction/Handle 0.00) -Hit render and time it. My trashcan takes 15 seconds for this Job. Cheers Nick |

Re: New Mac Pro Rendering Speed
This takes 8.5 to 8.9 seconds. (I did it a few times).
The CPU doesn't budge, either on iStat Menus or on the PT CPU usage meter. Happy to do a bigger test, just let me know. Dominic Last edited by dominicperry; 04-13-2021 at 06:37 AM. |

Re: New Mac Pro Rendering Speed
Single track/dverb only measures single-core performance though. Do the same for "a hundred" tracks, even if shorter, you get better picture of capabilities of modern processors.

Re: New Mac Pro Rendering Speed
Sure, so it only utilizes one processor.
Most renderings I do are single files only Thanks a lot for the test |

Re: New Mac Pro Rendering Speed
I don't know what I could do differently - but if I create 100 tracks and do the same thing, PT still processes one track at a time, and very inefficiently.
100 tracks takes over 14 minutes (almost exactly 8.5 secs x 100) and ramps a single core to about 30%, the rest of the cores are idling. Disk writes are ~60MB/sec, so that's not the bottleneck either. Looks like the architecture of PT is the real issue. Dominic |
