Paying via PayPal friends & family is not illegal at all. How come you claim this?? It is a matter of trust in the end. Buy from trustworthy sellers that are long enough around on the DUC or go on ebay or reverb.com.

Imagine the following situation:

The seller sells an iLok license to the buyer. The buyer pays with PayPal (incl. protection), uses the license for a week or two and then opens a PayPal dispute and claims that the license is not working. Who pays for the transfer back to the seller? The seller!
Because PayPal considers the license as “not working as expected", which of course is a lie but what does PayPal know about iLok licenses, have you ever tried it?? They do not care, been there, done this. Fully working licenses sales were rejected and the buyer asked for a refund.

In other words an iLok license transfer cannot be handled with regular PayPal. Just because PayPal doesn’t know that a license transfer fee is involved (which is actually supposed to be paid separately as it goes straight to iLok.com) so that if something goes wrong the seller pays for the transfer fee on top (so that the license is transferred back to his iLok.com account) and is left with nothing but the costs for the transfer fee.

Also, you as the one who is looking for a specific license should make sure that you are buying the right one. You take it easy and write: “For plugins working in Pro tools HD8”. Do your homework and find out yourself. Do not expect that sellers give you a guarantee (by accepting PayPal buyer protection) for 20 years old licenses!!

It’s like buying 20 year old cars and expecting buyer protection from a private seller.

PT8 was released in 2008 but regarding PayPal points are valid. Every transaction is based on trust, and there are scammers out there.
