Yep, that was the point I was making also, due to a physical practicality Apple had nothing to do with it

Windows8.1 comes from Windows8
8 comes from joining Windows RT and Windows7

WinRT was a light Windows8 designed for Phones/touchscreens like Nokia with 32-Bit ARM CPUs.
WinRT was also used in Microsoft Surface 1 & 2 Non-Pro Tablets with Nvidia Cortex 32-Bit ARM CPUs.

Microsoft Surface Pro 2 tablets had Windows8.1 Pro 64-Bit for x86_64 CPUs "Intel architecture."

Surface Pro tablets are a standard portable computer with touch screen, USB3, microSD and miniDP, 4K display output, intel graphics, etc...

Full Windows, Normal CPU.

Not like iPads that have a closed environment, different connectors, different OS and different CPU architecture, until M1 came along, and Now its all the same: OSX BigSur M1 and iOS A CPUs, just more cores.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surface_Pro

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_M1

Not like Android Tablets that have a different CPU architecture and different OS.

Win8.1 is an evolution of 8, 7 and RT...
W10 Pro x86_64 comes more from Windows7 Ultimate than Win8.1

but there is also a W10 for ARMv7 architecture used in some laptops with ARM Cortex SnapDragon CPUs "power efficient".
https://www.qualcomm.com/products/mo...ing/mobile-pcs

Acer Spin 7
ASUS NovaGo

HP ENVY x2
HP Elite Folio
Lenovo MIIX 630

Lenovo Yoga C630

Lenovo Flex 5G
Lenovo IdeaPad 5G
Samsung Galaxy Book 2

Samsung Galaxy Book S

a Windows10 version for ARM CPUs

similar to Apple M1 MacBook Air & MacBook Pro M1

W10 for ARM also has a x86 32-Bit emulation code that allows to run standard 32-Bit intel code, similar to Rosetta 2 in BigSur.
but SnapDragons are less powerful than M1
are more like a Big Android Tablet but with keyboard and Windows.

Actually, the U in the cpu stands for ultra low voltage, which also means lower performance. It’s a 2 core 1.9 ghz. That’s like running a bicycle against a kawasaki ninja h2r that would be a regular i5 4570 dual core 2.9 ghz. The later would still outperform the 4300u by a great margin, even if its older than the 4300u.

https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compar...U/m6853vsm4996

And in any case, it’s still not touching the fact that it’s still a tablet mode vs an actual desktop with mouse/keys that will behave a lot better.

And that’s not even counting that for the fraction of the price of the newer surface pro 7 you could get a refurbished z420 for roughly 400$

yes,

i have a Pro2* and i like it,
works ok for browsing internet, watching NetFlix, etc... Not gaming, ProTools works ok with a USB interface like Focusrite 8pre usb or 18i20mk2 and a decent quality powered USB hub, acme brand usb hubs are a nightmare.

but its old and batteries are damaged, only works plugged to the wall.
repair is almost impossible according to ifixit.com
https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Micr...Teardown/18604
when the 64GB microSATA drive gets damaged, and it will, will be very hard to repair.
64GB is barely the minimum for Windows8.1
but has a microSD slot that can be used with 32GB UHS-II cards, with 64GB microSD cards works strange.

Windows allows to make a System Backup, and Restore in a completly different hardware but requires a New license to Activate,

Surface Pro Windows8.1 license is OEM and can only be activated in 1 machine, license must be Deactivated before moving.

W10 license can be Downgraded to W8.1 or W7.virtual Pro license purchased from Microsoft Web Store = a Full Retail Box license that can be Re Activated unlimited times in different Hardware, but only 1 at a time.
also have several Windows8.1 Retail Box Full License for Bootcamp Desktops.

Win8.1 works great in tablet or desktops.

Surface Pro2 with a Belkin 4k miniDP to HDMI adapter, works well, with a 42" TV at FullHD, 4K at 40" its too small, pointless, you need to be too close, less than 1meter, and that distance requires a curved monitor/tv, even at 1.5meters, flat TVs look a bit weird, 1.8meters is the max distance.

55" FullHD at 3meters is also pointless for Myopic people, resolution must be lowered to HD 720p.

ideal would be a 80" 4K TV at 2 meters, maybe, a 65" is Not big enough at 4k.
40" horizontal at 1920 pixels is 48dpi.
40" horizontal at 3840x is 96dpi

HD5770 in MacPro5,1 is a nightmare with miniDP to HDMI adapters, only works with DVI to HDMI cable.

....
long ago did a test with Cinebench 2003,

available for PowerPC G4, G5 and x86_Windows,
http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://...b/benchmarks/*

the Surface Pro 2 wins vs. G5 Quad by a land slide...
in raw CPU performance...Surface Pro 2 makes 1700cb,
its a 4th gen intel.
Low Power does Not mean Less Powerfull, it means more efficient.
but Surface Pro2 vs. a MacPro5,1 x5690 or w3690 "2nd Gen 6-core Westmere" single CPU tray, the Pro 2 feels less powerful.

Pro2 eats 0.17 Amps at 120v AC, turned-On,
MacPro 5,1 eats 0.17A turned-Off,
0.7A IDLE single CPU tray, 1.0A IDLE Dual CPU Tray,
2.1A Booting.

MacPro 1,1 intel was similar performance vs. PowerMac G5 Quad in Cinebench 2003.
https://youtu.be/xm8cb48OZ60
but G5 Quad was $3k usd.
and MacPro 1,1 was $1.5k usd. according to everymac.com

Cinebench a 6-core Westmere x5690 or w3690 CPU "2nd Gen i7" vs.
G5 Quad 2.5Ghz or vs. MacPro1,1 its between 3.5x and 4.5x times more.

intel becomes very powerful and efficient in 8th gen cpus and after.

Anyway...

Surface Pro 1 has:
i5-3317U

Surface Pro 2 has:
i5-4200U early
i5-4300U late serials.*

Surface Pro 3:
i3-4020Y
i5-4300U
i7-4650U

Surface Pro 4:

Surface Pro 5 (2017):

Surface Pro 6:

Pro 7+: (2021)
