Default Playcell Palette to External Drive

Anyone know how to run the sounds from Playcell from an external drive? I'm not sure how useful it is going to be so would rather it take up room somewhere else if I don't use it much. Thank you!

Many plugins and apps have a prefs setting where you can point to the sounds library after having moved it, or the plugin will simply ask you 'please locate…'. I don't know if this applies to Playcell.

Anyway, I do this all the time because I saved some money on getting the smallest drive with my M2 mini. It goes like this, using Playcell folder as an example:

(MacHD-Library-Applicationsupport-Avid-Playcell)
- Copy folder to external
- Right-click copied folder and select 'create symbolic link' in 'Services' submenu
- copy the symlink to the internal original folder
- delete the original Playcell folder
- delete the "symlink" part of the symlink so it's just Playcell

I think using aliases will work just as fine, but I'm used to using symlinks. Perhaps someone more knowledgable can explain the difference to us…

Cool, I will give it a try. Same for me, keep the internal drive small and free of clutter, external drives for everything I can...

One thing to keep in mind is to have some order if you're going to do this with folders from Documents, Apps, Library/Applicationsupport etc. I have one folder on my external called MacHD folders. It contains subfolders so I can see where the symlinked folders came from. So keep a hierarchy so you can easily put them back if you need to. Just a precaution.

Another tip: Daisydisk is invaluable for me to keep track of what's taking up space on my drives. Recommended.

Well I tried it, only had an Alias as an option. It didn't work but after I had heard PlayCell I just scrapped it anyway. Might be useful for someone with no other or few other synths and virtual instruments. I didn't find a single inspiring sound in there, or any more inspiring than I have in 14 other places. No sense wasting HD space or cluttering up my list of plugins with something I will never use!

Yes. I tried it once also.
That's five minutes of my life that I'll never get back.

About the symlink thing;
I think maybe I installed an extension to let me have that in the services menu; can't really remember. Was way back.

This is planned and in the time line. I wish it could’ve been like this from launch but we’ll get there, especially considering the multitude of new instruments to come.

I think these freebies are good for people that don't have too much invested in VI's yet. I agree Play Cell isn't all that impressive. But I'm saying that because I'm comparing it to a wide range of VI's I already own - Falcon, Omnisphere, Serum, Dune 3, Massive, Reason Rack, etc etc.

If I didn't have any of those, I might think differently.
