Default XP Question

Is there a default password for Administrator that XP Home loads for a standard PC install?

I can't boot up and I need it for the recovery option.

Thanks,

John

the admin password should not be set unless you altered it at some point.

so login as Administrator and leave the password blank.

If I read this right, it doesn't work for XP?

Why can't I access my encrypted (EFS) files after resetting the password?
Because in XP and possibly later service packs in win2k the password itself is used to encrypt the keys needed for EFS.
Sorry, there is no way to recover the files once the password has been reset.
I tried leaving it blank, I never set a password, but it didn't work. I tried password etc.

I appreciate the replys/help but I think I'll just do a fresh XP install. I've done it six times before so what's a seventh?

Thanks
John

It should reset the admin password just fine allowing you to login and use the account. What you can't do with it once you've done that is unlock any encrypted or password protected files (not usually a problem for most people's home computers). I've used it dozens of times on several computers with no problem.

Once again I would like to offer up this suggestion, Go to www.worldstart.com , Look in their 'Windows XP Tips' section for the 'Windows XP Repair Install' tip. Follow the instructions exactly and it will repair your Windows XP install. It will leave your current file structure intact. I have used it on both my internet machine and my DAW, worked like a charm. You will have to re-install your updates and run through your services page to re-tweak XP but it does take a LOT LESS time than the new install. Try it you'll like it!
