Default Windows 64 bit and Dual Core Processor

Hello, I'm thinking about upgrading to one of those Intel D processors with the Dual Core technology. I would imagine you have to use Windows 64-bit to actually gain any benefit from such a processor (maybe I'm wrong?). So my question is this: Will Pro Tools LE 7 run on Windows 64-bit? I can't seem to find mention of it anywhere on the site. Thanks!

Yep. Sorry. PT 7.x utilizes the dual core, even in regular XP.

It's on every compatibility page:

64-bit and Dual-Core are two different technologies.

The Intel Duo, for instance, is a Dual Core chip (2 CPU's on one chip that share the same L2 Cache. The current version is 32-bit only. A 64-bit version is supposedly on its way in September.

For another example, the AMD Athlon FX2 is a 64-bit Dual Core chip that can also run in 32-bits, depending on the OS you are running (Windows XP [32], Windows XP 64 bit edition, or soon Windows Vista [64].)

Pro Tools works well with multiple CPU's already (including Dual Core chips.) It does not work with 64-bits yet.

Your best bet for performance depends on how often you want to upgrade in the future. For upgradeability in the PC world I would run a chip like the AMD FX2 with Windows XP (the regular 32 bit kind.)

This way you get the boost of having 2 CPU cores, which a number of programs take advantage of. You also have the ability to jump into 64-bits by upgrading your OS when your software and drivers are ready to do it and you have the cache.
