Default which software can you create drum tracks with

Im new to protools. I got the 002 with LE7 yestarday however I dont have a good computer to run it on yet. Im just making sure I'm ready to jump into everything. I have reason and sample tank with it so hopefully these will take care of drum tracks. So yeah, the question is, what program will I need to make drum tracks in protools...and is it as difficult as I think it's going to be?

Stoneroses63

Personally, I prefer Reason's ReDrum, great flexibility, (Refills, Routing, Importing) and not a bad over all sound.

...and as a sidenote, this is only as difficult as you make it.

Pro Tools DVD

Reason DVD

I agree, Reason's easy and the sound files are many, with good quality. It's Redrum is even good for a new user. Light something up, press play, and it will loop, making a sound each time it crosses the light. You'll see

BFD also gets noted on here as a really good program

so how do you use Reason Adapted to record to a midi track (or several separate instrument midi tracks, if possible) into PT?
I've been pencilling in and using sampletank.
And i have used Reason for loops, but never actually knew how to record them as midi info.

thanks!

You don't record/create a MIDI track with reason adapted and/or redrum. You create the MIDI track in Pro Tools, and control the instruments in Reason. You could also create a MIDI track in reason, and control the instruments. Bottom line, the software doesn't create the MIDI, you do.

I have used some drum programming stuff, but I prefer to use samples I make myself (multi-velocity hits) and snap them to grid, make a quik loop, repeat, and do that for all the parts of the song (ie verse, chorus, bridge, ect..) It is a little more work, but your programming won't sound like everything else, because you are using your own samples
If I am in need of a quick groove though, I will use Redrum in Reason. Works fast, although a little stale.

I hope your using 7.x if not just replace Instrument tracks with MIDI/AUX

Pro Tools Mix Window
Create ten mono Instruments tracks
Name them BD, SN 1-2-3-4, TOM 1-2, HH 1-2 and CYM
Alt click the faders
Insert Reason in all ten Instrument tracks
Route ReWire from Mix L through to Channel 10 over all ten Instrument tracks
Set MIDI I/O to ReDrum Channel 10 (or Channel 6, I can't remember off the top of my head) in all ten Instrument tracks via the Instruments View Control (View>Mix Window>Instruments)

Pro Tools Edit Window
Map all ten Instrument tracks, Octave 1 Note C1 through to A1 via Track Height>Single Note

Saving as a Template, use Save As command

ReDrum
Flip (Tab) Reason
Edit>Select All Devices
Edit>Disconnect Cables
Right click ReDrum's Channel 1 Output plug and select Hardware Interface Input 1
(This will result in a Stereo routing setup, disconnect that cable from Hardware Interface Input 2)
Right click ReDrum's Output's 2 through to 10, connecting them to Hardware Interface Input 2 through to 10

Saving as a Template, use Save As command and navigate your way to your Pro Tools ReDrum Template Session Folder via the Save In window

p.s. If you want to record these tracks to Audio, Buss the Output to the Input of seperate Audio tracks. (Mono Buss 1 through to 10)
