Have you tried SwitchResX as per my post above?

Id also just ensure that gamemode and freesync are both off. Freesync should be off by default if its not supported, but just check it anyway.

No. I missed that nugget. Thanks for pointing it out. I'll try that next!

The other thing which might be symptomatic of the issue is the sound just disappears when listening via HDMI via the speakers. Watching a YouTube video via the screen is all good until the sound dies at random.

I can get it back by disconnecting the HDMI cable or turning the monitor off and on. I'm left with the new sound option and the old dead one, see pic.

A couple of replies on a FB group mention trying a ThunderBolt to DisplayPort cable as that should fix the issue. So I'll go shopping again and report back.

Before I purchased an Apple XDR I used to use Dell U-Series 38" Screen LED-Lit Monitor (U3818DW), Black on my 2019 Mac Pro using the Dell's USB-C port instead of HDMI or Display Port and everything worked fine. It's like it was meant for Mac. All positive reviews by Mac owners on Amazon.

BTW, when you click System Preferences > Display, to see ALL supported resolutions hold down Option while clicking Scaled. You don't need a third party app for this anymore.
