Default Liquid Channel w/ 003?

I just picked up the Focusrite Liquid Channel and am trying to figure out the best way to use it with my 003.

Should I use SPDif into the 003 for the best quality or just go analogue?

Should I connect the wordclock?

I have the RCA digital cable and am wondering if that is the right cable to use?

I am completely new to using a unit like the Liquid Channel so any and all help is MUCH appreciated.

thanks!

I would hook it up to the SPDIF input and wordclock is an option but not required(use wordclock if you also will have a lightpipe device attached). You should use digital cables made for digital audio for the SPDIF connection. You will have to go to the I/O setup page and enable the path.

Using spdif means the LM will be doing the analog to digital conversion, if you think it'll do a better job (003's are known to have average AD convertors), use spdif. If not, use the analog outs on the Liquid Mix and let the 003 do the converting.

If you use SPDIF to connect the LM and your 003 you will need both devices to clock from the same source. Use the best clock so if you think the clock is likely to be better on the LM, get the 003 to clock from the spdif in, or better yet, use the wordclock connections so your clocking info has its own connection (you'll get less jitter on your spdif connection).

The quality of the cables you use is really important, you want as short and as high quality an RCA spdif cable as you can get/afford. Same goes for BNC word clock cables.

In deciding what setup to go with, ideally you should try analog and digital hook ups and do an A/B comparison of the two. Let your ears be the judge.

Hope this helps.

Simon

Actually, this isn't quite right...the Liquid Channel has an analog front end but most of what it does is in the digital domain, so you will be using the Liquid Channel's converters regardless. What will happen if you go analog is you'll be introducing an extra round f A/D-D/A conversion...the Focusrite A/D converter into the preamp, then back to analog through its D/A converter, then back to digital again through the 003's converter. So you'd definitely be better of going into the 003 digitally as you woudln't be choosing between two converters, you'd just be adding an extra converter into the chain.
