Note that the drive speed really won't make a HUGE difference for Pro Tools (if you use disk cache, you can even put your sessions on a USB flashdrive!) but since you are spec'ing out a top-tier build, I'd go with PCIe 4.0 drives. The extra speed "might" help with some VIs that stream samples, too.

Are you going with Windows 11 Pro clean install?

Titanium PSU?

DDR5?

Thanks for the reply. DDR5 yes 64gig. Win 11 - not sure. The shop that's building says they prefer to wait a year after release of a new OS to be sure the kinks are worked out and recommend (for now) sticking with Win-10. I'd do a clean install of that.

PSU - yes I like what you recommended there.

Still not sure on the graphics piece yet. Looking around at options. Again the alpha-numeric soup on all these gizmos is daunting!

Seconded, works exceptionally well. For i9-12900K Win 11 is far superior over W10 as the OS task scheduler "understands" the 2 different cores ("performance" and "efficiency", similar to Apple's new CPU's), so it's better guaranteed that the audio processing that needs the most punch gets the P-cores. W10 might get this optimization later, but doesn't have it atm.

Then I'll tell them Win-11 it is. I'm getting the ball rolling now. I'll have to order a couple things from New Egg first that the shop doesn't have. But the process has begun! I can't thank you guys enough for the good input. I'm looking forward to having a solid system again.

What's the best way to transfer all my current programs and plugins to the new system? I've had some issues surface recently that I don't want to have show up in the new system. For example, with iLok, I can't access the iLok server. I worked with iLok's helpdesk to resolve the issue and nothing worked. I had to install iLok on a different computer (my laptop) and now have to do all my updates there and move the dongle from one to the other. Annoying.

So, if I do a clean install of Win-11, I can't just clone my OS. Do I do a clean install of everything (which would take quite a while)?

I assume I can do a straight copy of all files from the session drive, the sample drive and such? Its the program files on the OS I'm wondering how best to handle.

And I'll be able to clean up a lot of drek too.

I would suggest a clean install of everything, with freahly loaded installers. For anything that doesn't offer w11 installer a w10 one is fine. And yes you can copy over all sessions, documents folder contents etc. I often just physically transfer drives. A lo of app settings can also be copied, but it can get fiddly, google does have instructions foe pretty much anything.

I sorta figured that would be the case. I'm concerned about losing some of the auto settings I have for some of the plugins. I'll have to figure out how to preserve those files.

On the bright side, this will be a great opportunity to dump a lot of garbage off the OS. And the other drives too, for that matter. I got a nice WD 8TB My Book drive to back everything up on before beginning the transfer process once the new system is built.

Since you are starting from scratch, I recommend doing some drive images during the process:
Image #1-with Windows installed and tweaked, all drivers for all hardware and with quicktime installed.
Image #2-with Pro Tools installed and tested for proper function.
Image #3-with all your plugins installed.
Image #4-after a month or two of smooth sailing, this will be your "Fully working dandy" image for the future(its up to you if you want to delete earlier images, but I would keep them as drive space is cheap these days)
