Default MP3 Drag and Drop UPDATE

Another thread chronicles the new problems of dragging-and-dropping many MP3s into sessions in more recent releases of Pro Tools - taking too long to import, corrupted files once it does, a real mess…

We have an answer!

When this began, I opened a ticket with Avid support and after sending them files of the corrupt noise that drag-and-drop created, and a volley of more emails, they just sent this:

A bug has been successfully logged for the mp3 import issue and is already being reviewed by our Engineering team, pending prioritization in Engineering's backlog. Thank you for your assistance and patience in helping us with this. Just a heads-up, we cannot promise an ETA for any type of fix. From this point on, we will need to leave it up to Engineering.

They found the bug. Now the wait begins…

They've fixed it and undone it several times. It's really odd for a routine that shouldn't change.

Precisely. And I can't imagine that they don't catch wind of it almost immediately once it's discovered in the wild, yet it tends to take a while for the repairs to be released. It certainly should not require a full update to introduce such fixes -- a service pack of some sort will do.

I'm discovering that the source files themselves make all the difference. 98% of the MP3s I try to import are fine, but when I find one that's corrupt upon import it will be so every time, tho not always in the same way. There's something about the way these MP3s are created that trips up PT. Still, this wasn't an issue in recent versions prior to 2022.12 and it needs a fix.

UPDATE: And this just landed in my inbox from Avid:

“I was informed that the fix for this issue will now be in the next release. Since a fix is now in place for this bug and Engineering won't be requiring anything more on our end, I will also be closing this case.“

Fingers crossed.
