Hi guys
Recently updated to Leopard (10.5.4) on my Macbook Pro (2.16 ghz intel core 2 duo, 1 gb ram). I had been running Pro Tools 7.4 flawlessly on Tiger for a while and just recently upgraded to Leopard. I performed a clean erase & install of Leopard and then a clean install of pro tools 7.4.2. I am now experiencing serious problems on sessions without ANY plugins. Just running a session for about 45 seconds to 1 min the system will freeze totally with no communication from my mouse or keyboard for about 3 seconds and then i get a pro tools -9128 or -6105 error. The system monitor will be at virtually zero CPU and right when this freeze occurs it will spike to red as the comp freezes for a few seconds. Does anyone know what is going on?? I can't even use the system it happens so frequently - without any plugins! I've tried turning off bluetooth, airport, changing buffer and processor settings and still getting the same hang up. There has to be something going on. Help?? thanks! |

Most probably incompatible plug-ins. These can cause problems even when not instantiated in a session. That's the first thing I'd investigate.
Also, the new OS install may use default settings so check to make sure nothing is running in the back ground that might kick-in and cause a CPU spike (e.g Airport/Bluetooth, Anti-Virus, Energy saver etc). http://www.myspace.com/philogg |

Thanks for your reply.
I uninstalled pro tools and reinstalled - deleting all plugins except for those that come packaged with the 7.4.2 download. SAME PROBLEM! this is crazy - am I the only one experiencing this? I have no plugins being loaded at startup other than the digi-qualified plugins that come with 7.4.2. I get the same 4-5 second freeze where the screen freezes and mouse and keyboard freeze. I'm considering going back to Tiger. This is very strange. Any other ideas? ps - all background system processes are off - no time machine, blue tooth, airport, energy saver, screen saver. i'm officially baffled. |

Check your software update control panel - there was a known keyboard/trackpad/screen freezing issue in some earlier versions of Leopard that affected some laptops. Apple released a software update patch for it a while back though, but when you mention the intermittent freezing that's the first thing that came to mind.
10.5.5 won't hurt you either, might as well get everything up to date. Use the 'combo' updater from Apple's website for doing OS updates like 10.5.4->10.5.5, they tend to cause less problems than using the automatic software update. |

still having the same problems. I have pro tools 7.4.2 clean with no plugs and I still keep getting these spikes...about to go back to tiger so i can run sessions.
Any help from the Digitechs? Are the macbook pros that ship with leopard configured differently to run leopard better than mine? I can run pro tools fine on tiger no problem - its just these constant spikes and freezes that kill me on leopard |

Which Digidesign hardware are you using? If it's a firewire device, do you possibly have Firewire networking enabled in your Network control panel?

thanks for the response - Mbox 2 USB. I have time machine, airport, bluetooth, dashboard, spotlight...just about every "extra" mac background process turned off and I still get a delibiltating cpu spike with a clean pro tools 7.4.2 with only digi packaged plugins...when im playing just 1 blank audio track

Can you give us more details on your system? What type of drive are you recording and playing back from? Do you have any other devices connected to the computer and, if so, what are they?
Are you connecting the Mbox 2 to the proper USB port? http://digidesign.com/index.cfm?lang...4&itemid=24151 |

ok - the Mbox2 is plugged into the left USB port...same port I used with tiger
Macbook pro 15" 2.16 ghz intel core 2 duo 3 gb ram Leopard 10.5.4 Pro tools 7.4.2 I am using a Glyph 500 GB Firewire 800 drive for record and playback. I stopped using my bluetooth mighty mouse because I thought bluetooth was the culprit so i am now using a USB mighty mouse. The other devices plugged in are an iLok and an m-audio axiom midi controller via a usb hub on my right usb port. I did a clean re-install of leopard and then installed only pro tools 7.4.2 so there was nothing else on the system and I still experienced these problems. |

Exactly same problem here.
Same set up specifictions :Mbox 2, only Air and Digirack plugins, everithing else disabled,....well exactly the same than the previous post. Only one more detail, I've tried that with an protols MP "Firewire Solo" system and the error still appears. Thanks |
