Default Mbox plays session from Mix at different speed

A client I have just brought a session back from a studio in NYC. It was a 5 track interview, voice only. It was recorded on a Mix ( not sure of the version but can find out if needed) System .. Mac OS 9.1 48k session 24bit. My client is trying to import this onto a Mac OS 9.2 Mbox sytem. The session imprts fine but all of the audio is playing back fast. 1 semi tone +25 cents to be exact. That is the pitch correction I used to bring it back where it should be. This was done by ear so those are not precise numbers although those number work consistantly accross all tracks
I opened the original session..played fast. I created a new session 48k 24 bit, and improtrd the tracks, also plays fast.
I would like to know if anyone had experianced this or knows of a way to compensate for this other than waht I did.

Thanks,

Greg

You have a setting set to something that is causing this. Inside either "Playback engine", or "Hardware Set up" (or maybe BOTH) there is a "clock source" or "sync" thing setting. If it is NOT set to "Internal" you will have this problem. When experiencing that problem, it usually was accidentally set to "Digital", or "External", or something like that..

Just set it to "Internal"

Hope This Helps --

Well, wouldn't that make sense? after all, it was a TDM system, so it was probably slaved off of a master timepiece of some sort.

not neccesarily. i know people who have standalone TDM sytems who have no need for a master timepeice.

Have you checked your session sample rate? It sounds like you're playing back the session files at 48000 but the audio files are actually at 44.1. It's worth a look anyway.

The file info says it is 48k .All sync settings on the Mbox system are set to internal. Tried changeing sample rate. No change. Could the files be 44.1 and read that they are 48? Dosen't sound possible. I suspect the TDM system was using an external clock adn that it is somehow different than the clock in the Mac/Mbox System. I was just wondering if anyone had ever seen this happen between TDM systems and Native systems like the Mbox. The Pitch conversion workaround got me by the problem but It dosen't seem like the problem should have been there to beginwith. I was thinking compatability bug maybe?

This would happen if the system that recorded the tracks was using a 48khz session, but was clocked by an external 44.1hkz clock.

You could figure out the exact adjustment for the 48/44.1 mismatch - or just find a program for changing the sample rate in the audio file header, then loading it into a session of the correct rate. Such a program exists for wave files on PC, written bt Rail Jon Rogut.

On a Mac you'd use SoundHack or import the files into the correct sample rate session without converting the sound files.

This one make sense. Being that is is voice only and that I don't have any sample conversion software. i will stick with the pitch conversion method. It works fine for this. Good thing to know though. I will have my client check with any studios she works with to be sure thier clocks are all on the same "page".
Thanks,
Greg

This is not an uncommon problem. Here is hohw to sort it out:-

- Create a new 48k(or 44k if you did this the other way around) session.
- Go to 'import session data'. Select the session you want to fix. Choose the tracks you want to import.
- In the 'Sample rate conversion options' check 'Apply SRC and change source sample rate to 48000(or 44k if you did this the other way around)'
- Make sure the conversion quality is 'Tweak head'
- Click 'Ok'
- Now your session will playback at the proper speed. Save your new session.
