Default Modifying Mackie Preamps?

hello.

Been having a discussion with a friend and he tells me he has heard of a mackie 8 bus board that has had its preamps modified. Supposedly to make them sound like some higher end consoles. Anyone else heard of this? If so I would be interested in hearing more.

Thanks,
Michael

Just do some exploring on the web, and you'll be surprised what turns up.

Enable a bunch of search engines in Sherlock 2, type in "Mackie + mods" (no quotation marks, and STAND BACK! There's a huge list of stuff to pick through.

Here was one interesting place:

People have been modifying gear for ages. Perhaps some improvements can be made, but often, if cost cutting is being done (as in the case of a Mackie), the "cheapness" is spread throughout the unit. Upgrade one aspect of the circuit, and you could easily cause other problems (e.g. you could replace some of the op amps with higher quality units, but better chips usually draw more power - can the power supply handle them?).

Unless you really know what you're doing, it's often best to leave stuff alone. One thing's for sure - it's a quick way to cancel your warranty and destroy resale value.
