Question Migrating to new computer, how-to?

Hi!

I will be purchasing a new computer and want to migrate Pro Tools to it. When I get the new computer I will not have access to the old one.

Do I need to deactivate Pro Tools on the old computer before activating it on my new one?

I am interested in the best practice because I want to be up and running for work within 12 hours.

Thanks!!
Cj

12 hours? Good luck. You might get the basics installed, but 12 hours is not long enough for all the ancillary software you might need configured.

Consider cloning the boot drive of the previous computer to have available for preferences, etc.. Although it's controversial, Migration Assistant does many things quite well.

Also, don't forget to deauthorize iTunes.

I'm guessing you are on a Mac.

Carbon Copy Cloner http://www.bombich.com/

or you can restore from a Time Machine backup.

Chronosync is also very good for bootable clones.

if you have any plugs that are Challenge/Response authorization de-authorize those first
I would not us Migration Assistant to move the PT app but for account names, basic system settings and, general documents it's good
also I would do a drag and drop copy of the Library>Application Support>Digidesign folder as a backup

Plus buying a new computer . . .

If it is a Mac you'll be SOL - the new boxes come with Lion - no workey. Might want to wait if possible or visit the refurb store.

Might help if you clarify whether you are currently using PC or Mac and if you are migrating to same platform of different one.

Also what version of Pro Tools are you using and which plugins too?

if you are on a mac use time machine to back up your system (do it several times) and when you buy your new mac and start it up, it will offer the option "recover setup/system from time machine backup." use this and and plugin your ilok, time machine will deliever you a copy of your system on your new computer. note: this can take up to 2 hours but it works (flawlessly for me 3 times). Do not use Lion OS X!

Question Re: Migrating to new computer, how-to?

Thanks to everyone for their advice.

I have done migrations using Time Machine before, but I was wondering about the new Mac OS Lion. So, what is the scoop?

I am current on Pro Tools 9.0.3 for Mac. Will it work? Or, will I need to set up the new MacBook Pro that I will be getting is some special way?

Thanks in advance for your responses!

All best!!!
CJ
