Default Migrating PT8 & plugins to a new computer.

What is the best way for me to migrate all my music apps. (PT8, Peak, etc) and their plugins from my old G5 system drive to my new Mac Pro's system drive? (They're both Mac OS 10.5.8) I've been told that Apples migration assitant is not always perfect and can couse some big problems. Can I exchange the SATA system drives?

Thank you,
and Happy Holidays!
-Mark

You cannot put a G5 system disk into Intel machine and expect it to boot as usual, because the boot sector is different. It just won't work.

IMO, your best bet would be to spend an extra hour for a clean installation. In other words, start from scratch and install everything anew. That way you have a solid starting point without any extra stuff that you don't need/want.

Migration assistant puts all unnecessary stuff there because it doesn't know what you need and what not, so it copies everything.

Just remember to backup plugin settings if you take the clean install route :) those are easy to forget.

JFreak is correct, the best thing is to do a clean install of everything
You can use Migration Assistant for Address Book, IP settings, user accounts

I'm looking to installing Snow Leopard soon. And I have never used Migration Assistant. This is what I am hoping to do:

1. Buy a new Hard Drive and installing Snow Leopard on it.

2. Use Migration Assistant to help me move my address book, pictures, documents, IMAIL (I hope) from my previous hard drive.

3. Painfully install all of my plug-ins, applications and etc. from the ground up.

Is this pretty much the route most people are using???

That's the safest way for sure, but I just used Migration Assistant to move everything over (including PT and all plugs) and it worked absolutely fine. Mind you, I was going from stable and clean 10.5.8 with PT 8.0.3 to SL. And I made sure all my plugs etc were updated and SL ready.

Tripit,

Thank you.

Do you or anybody use imail to know if your email messages/inboxes and etc. are migrated over to your new OS with the Migration Assistant?

Thanks.

Actually, just FYI, a friend took his boot drive from his G5 and tossed it into his new Nehalem Mac Pro and it worked just fine. We didn't expect it to, but he's been using it OK.
