Default New to PLTE and MIDI - Q re velocity on the edit page

Hi there -

Completely new to Midi and PTLE so its a steep learning curve. I've used Reason before, and understand how to change parameters on the "piano roll" edit page, but...

How do I change velocity and note length using a mouse in PT(no midi keyboard!) - Actually how do I change any parameters for individual notes?

I'm using Addictive Drums which is a great program for programming "real" drum performances...

The thing is though that I want to tweak the individual drum hits to get different types of hits/strokes and velocities, and note lengths

So far I can drag and drop the midi file on to the edit page, and I can move the notes around etc, but the hits are all full velocity when I play back the sound.

I see there is a window where you can adjust velocity, but it seems that this changes the value for all notes (?)

Wow.

You're basically asking "How do I use Pro Tools"? Which is pretty broad and difficult to answer.

MIDI and instrument tracks (actually, all tracks do) have different view modes. You can switch views on the tracks by selecting a different view mode from the view selector on the track. One of those view modes is "Velocity" where the velocity of each note is represented by a "stalk". Each of these "stalks" can be edited separately using the grabber tool, or as a group by selecting part of the region, and also by selecting and grouping individual stalks.

Changing note durations is done in notes view and can be done with both the trimmer tool and the pencil tool.

Detailed information and instruction, including photo representations of all of the tools and selectors that I mentioned, can be found in the Pro Tools Reference Guide, specifically in Chapter 27 "MIDI Editing". The Pro Tools Reference Guide is installed as a PDF with the program by default from the program disks, and also with a documentation installer if you have upgraded the program via download. It can also be viewed for free anytime in the Support and Downloads section of the Digidesign website. I highly recommend spending some time with it. It's search-able, and indexed very well, and most everything you are looking to do is covered there.
