Upgrading HDX card FW using previous version of PT
I’m on a MacPro5,1 (4,1 firmware upgraded to 5,1, Early 2009).
Still on High Sierra, 10.13.6, due to my non Metal compatible graphics card (NVIDIA GeForce GT 120). Since I heard successful stories about upgrading to PT 2021.3 on similar rigs, I’d like to try that, but also be able to roll back to 2020.11 if it doesn’t work. So, will 2020.11, or some other previous version, still work with the 2021.3 firmware updated HDX card? Also, at the moment I’m using a Fast Track Solo, while waiting for a new interface, since my HD Omni died recently. Will the absence of an HD compatible interface affect the FW upgrade of the HDX card, since an interface is needed to make the card available to Pro Tools?

Re: Upgrading HDX card FW using previous version of PT
Any PT version should inform you if firmware change is needed, don't need to worry about that part. I have absolutely no idea if the firmware update can be done without interface. PT will give you error about missing interface, but have not tested if it comes before or after firmware update.

Re: Upgrading HDX card FW using previous version of PT
So firmware upgraded HDX cards are always backward compatible with previous versions of Pro Tools?
I don’t need to worry about trying 2021.3 and rolling back to 2020.11 if PT doesn’t plays nicely on my system? (macOS 10.13.6)

In order to support Big Sur, Pro Tools and the HD Driver have been updated to use modern interrupts (MSI). This change may also prevent or minimize conflicts with other PCIe devices on any supported operating systems.

Thank you, originalscottyg and JFreak!

Hopefully it’s compatible with my MacPro5,1 (FW upgraded 4,1), too!
