Best G5 for HD2 Accel? PCI or PCI-X?
Hey there,
Can any Guru answer this question? I know HD PCI cards do not take advantage of PCI-X, but is there an advantage of putting an HD PCI card in a PCI-X slot that has more bandwidth or not? I'm looking to buy a PCI G5 and am not sure which one to get. Are the 2.3 DP (Non Dual Core) any good for HD PCI? Many thanks in advance.. |

Anyone? Surely someone here is using a G5 PCI and or PCI-X..
Let me rephrase the question.. If you use solely TDM plugs, is there any disadvantage to using a PCI G5 vs a PCI-X G5? Thanks.. |

G5 Dual 2.3 PCI-X works great for me!!
Hey gearhead2010
I'm currently using a G5 Dual 2.3mhz PCI-X machine with, 4.5gb ram, 250gig system drive, 320gig audio drive, Sonnet G5 Jive with two 250gig drives and one 320gig drive for samples, virtual instruments and 2-track audio backups, HD Core, Sonnet SATA 4+4 card, and my Magama Chassis interface card. I also have two 20" Apple displays connected with one side of my dvi port going to a Gefen DVI DL Splitter so I can have a mirrored image on my programming stations 22" LCD Display for a total of 3 displays. Extermally I have two 500gig eSATA drives, 320gig eSATA, 400gig USB drive, 400gig Firewire drive, Two firewire DVD/CD burners, and a 7 Slot 32bit, 33mhz Magma chassis with two Accel cards and two process cards. With all that and keeping my system maintenance in tact, I have no problems running Mac OSX 10.4.11, Pro Tools 7 thru 7.4cs6 with up to 100 or more tracks at 24bit 44khz without any issues. Also, RTAS isn't perfect, but it works great for me to get my virtual instruments tracked to audio. I hope this helps! Randy www.reflectiveproductionsandrecording.com |

Wow! That's a lot of rig...
Cool, I'm mainly going to be mixing on the HD2 Accel as I have a Mac Pro with Logic / Symphony, so VI aren't that big of a deal for me.. I guess I could even get away with a older Dual 2.0 Mac and do the job.. Many thanks.. |

If you're buying your G5 used, watch out for "liquid cooled" Macs - starting to be a problem...

Thanks, I always instinctively thought any computer with liquid in it would be a bad idea!
I'm looking at Dual 2.0's.. You can get them fairly loaded for around $700 now.. |
