Re: To bass manage or not to bass manage
Hello Rick -
If you are mixing 5.1 for Dolby Digital, you will need to have a 120Hz LP filter in your playback system, AKA B-Chain, (not as part of the mix) and this is also what Dolby recommends. When you encode your mix, the Dolby Digital encoder has a meta data setting for the LFE low-pass as well, so you can be sure that any Dolby Digital encoder / decoder will bandwidth limit the signal to 120Hz. Having said that, just because the LFE bandwidth goes out to 120Hz, it doesn't mean you have to send a signal with that frequency range to the LFE channel. Many people tend to limit the LFE content to stuff below 80Hz, because you are typically not running out of headroom above 80Hz in most playback or monitoring systems. Cheers!

Re: To bass manage or not to bass manage
I send all my LFE stuff via a send and an aux input with a low pass filter set at 80-100Hz and a pretty steep (24db per octave) roll off. It depends on the room and the subs I'm working in on which frequency I use. But I always filter the LFE. You never know where your stuff may get played back. An improperly set up system may allow a subwoofer to playback info as high up as 300hz. Filtering will avoid this.

Re: To bass manage or not to bass manage
I have a small project studio that does primarily music for indie clients and lotsa of Art and installation as well as music for lower budget films. I do not usually do surround mixes for film music projects but sometimes do stems. I have though recently done several surround music mixes that ended up on DVDs.
I have a pair of Dynaudio near fields and a 5.1 Genelec system with 5 satelittes and a subwoofer. I also have a StudioComm 69A surround controller with Two sets of surround in and out and two sets of stereo in and out. I realize that there is no bass management on this system, but I do have Waves surround Toolkit and sometimes use the manage tool to simulate consumer playback systems. However, I do not have the option of using my subwoofer as a sub for my dynaudios. The controller routing forces one or the other. I am looking for a system like the StudioComm but with bass mangement and the ability to route any combination of speakers and still use the subwoofer. So I could use the dynaudios with or without subwoofer in addition to the Genelecs. I would like to turn on or off bass management for either set of speakers. It seems like the Blue Sky system is only one source and destination set so it really doesn't allow this. MY request is for specific equipment brands and models that would allow the two source and destination set up with independant control of whether the subwoofer is used and allows bass mangement with adjustable filter. I notice the Blue Sky is 80Hz but the standard seems to be 120Hz. |

Re: To bass manage or not to bass manage
the genelec system has a bass management in the sub, with a switch -- at least the 7070A and 7071A's do. you can run it on a cable attached to a box that its on your console or desk, or whatever you use. also has a +10dB switch on it. that way you can turn it on and off. if you can't make a switch, order one from genelec.
the Studio Comm 65 IS a bass manager. you could add that to what you have. oitherwise, you can look at a TASCAM DS-M7.1

It may be worth reading this thread in total, because much of this has already been covered (if you have the time ). However, the 80Hz filter in our BMC is for the bass-management section (crossover between SAT & SUB). This frequency is dictated by the design of the SAT and SUB (how low the SAT goes, the roll off characteristics, ported or sealed box design etc). The goal being; to create a seamless blend between SAT and SUB, so that each channel (L, C, R, LS & RS) sounds like one full-range channel. The 120Hz filter is for the LFE channel, which is not the same as the bass-managed subwoofer channel. Both the bass-managed subwoofer channel and the LFE are summed and played back via one ore more subwoofers. Here is a link to a signal flow diagram that shows how our BMC works. www.audiodesignlabs.com/signal1.jpg Cheers!
