No.
Pro Tools is still a 32 bit app, therefore 4 GB is the theoretical limit. In practice you can probably get around 3 - 3.7GB

No, but you can use the Ram cashing option that comes with pro tools 10 that will help with big session responsiveness. Although it wont allow you to use more vi's or plugins once you reach the 3.5 gigs limit. It will how ever load up part or your entire session into ram, which will speed up the software considerably. Available on PT hd10 or pt with the cptk.

Re: Can Pro tools use 16gb ram on a Macbook Pro late 2011
I was going to ask this exact same Q i still don't get how it works . I got 16 gig of Ram on my system. So PT only uses 4gig what does the rest 12 gig do ? Do plugins/vst's/rewire (Reason) use the rest of the 12 gig ?

Re: Can Pro tools use 16gb ram on a Macbook Pro late 2011
No the time line, (audio files. and the information that goes with them, like the fades handles etc) gets loaded into the rest of the ram cash. Basically your HDD isn't being used at that point to read the audio, which speeds up things. The Ram cash is a little utility that works outside of protools, but only accessible from inside of it, that enables access to the excess ram. your vi's and plugins are still access the ram from within pro tools, so they're still limited by the amount of ram Pro tools can access as a 32 bit application.

Re: Can Pro tools use 16gb ram on a Macbook Pro late 2011
WHY does Pro tools system requirements say:
Total System RAM: 2GB minimum, 4GB (or more) recommended This indicates Pro Tools benefits by MORE than 4gb of ram? |

I took the question to be can the mb pro take 16 GB RAM since it states 8 is the max in apple's site. Yes it can take 16.

If you have 4GB on your machine, some of that will be used by other programs and the OS, so Pro Tools would actually have less than 4GB available to it. If you had 6GB or more, then Pro Tools would have a full 4GB available to it. |

Yes. Reason, Reaper or other things that work via rewire will use the RAM above and beyond what PT uses. Native Instruments Kontakt has a preference to set specifically to use available RAM outside of PT even though it runs as a VI plugin. Vienna Ensemble Pro is another application that runs outside PT and PT used RAM to "network in" VIs. It works on the host computer or even better on a second computer. |
