Default 9128 and 6085 errors with Kontakt 5 AAX

Hello,
I have struggled for days now trying to solve this problem. I really hope that someone will be so kind and point me in a right direction.
Here is the issue: I have a very small basic session which has 3 audio tracks (bass, guitars) and one instrument track which has the Kontakt AAX version of Abbey Road 60’sDrummer. This is the plugin that is unfortunately giving me the problems. I get randomly two types of error messages:
Running out of cpu power (system usage window never exceeds 20 %) error Code 9128 a buffer underflow error 6085.
What I have done so far:
1. Double-checked windows optimization
2. Moved samples to different drive than the audio session files
3. Tried different playback engine settings (nr of processors and CPU usage limit…7, 8 proc.85...99%)
4. Reinstalled whole system win 7
5. downgraded back to 10.3.2
6. Turned of TurboBoost in Asus Bios

It must be the problem with the Kontakt AAX plugin because I have much more CPU intensive sessions with a lot of plugins and I never have this problem.
Any ideas will be greatly appreciated. Thank You in advance.

Samples should *never* have been installed on the audio/session drive. They go on the system/boot drive or their own drive. In your system what exactly is on what hard drive?

The ' WD10TMVW'/"My Passport" drive is a Caviar Green drive, utter piece of cheap and nasty crap. I hope that is just a backup drive? Totally unusable for use as an audio/session drive, and I'd never put samples on it either. They are a backup drive, or door stop, at best. You can read all the horror stories about Caviar Green drives on DUC.

You only have 4 physical cores, ignoring hyperthreading trickery. Start with Pro Tools CPU=3 (say at 99%) and get things stable and then you can try increasing (to see if virtual cores provide help or just instability).

A lot of this is likely Kontakt setup...

Are you running the Kontakt memory server? (try turning that off)

How many CPUs are allocated in Kontact (try 1). (I'm not even sure if this is now set to one automatically with Pro Tools hosts, just not sure, others think not. Anyhow just set it to 1 to try.).

Kontakt is very complex, you have to follow the doc/guides to get good performance. Have you followed the standard Kontact setup/optimization for Pro Tools? http://www.native-instruments.com/kn...e+of+KONTAKT+5

Darryl,

Thank You very much. I will go over all these suggestions right now. As for the external drive, that is only a drive that was connected during the Sandra Report. It is not the drive where any of my samples or audio files reside. As I mentioned before the samples are on a seperate internal drive and the audio files on another. Pro Tools is installed on the system drive which is a SSD.
I will chceck all the other options and let You know.
Again, thank You very much for taking the time to give me some new directions.

Piotr

Oops and I was getting my platform wires crossed, the memory server is only an option on OS X.

Hello,

a quick update on the problem. I went ahead with Darryl's suggestions and experimented with the host procesor settings. I tried anything from 3 to 8 and both with multiprocessor support in Kontakt and without. I assigned anything from 2-8 cpu there too. It still gives me now mostly the cpu error 9128. What I find so strange is that on my system usage window the cpu naver exceeds 20%. So how can I run low on Cpu Power? A am sure that this must be something with the way the Kontakt AAX plugin wants to use the cpu. I went through the NI Forum but it is nowhere as informative as this one. Had anyone had these issues with Kontakt 5 ?
As i said the session is really small. I broke it down to just two audio tracks with a couple od EQ and Compressor. The BufferSize is 512 or 1024. Going to 256 makes audio terrrible.
Thank You

Piotr

Default 9128 and 6085 errors with Kontakt 5 AAX

You do not need to experiment by increasing the number of host processors 3 @ 99% should be a good setting, but if that does not work increasing the number can only make things *worse*, and just waste your debugging time. You could try the extreme case of 2 or 1 but if its not working at 3 something else is wrong. Watching the CPU meter is a waste if time as well, it does not see the short term blips that cause these problems.

If you tried 3 host processors and your Pro Tools and NI software is all up to date and sessions and samples and apps correctly installed on the right drives then the most likely thing is you missed a standard Pro Tools systems optimization. You have to go through and do every last one, WiFi or incorrect BIOS settings or other things can easily cause these problems. If you think you have done that before go back and check them all again. Antivirus software needs to be completely off or uninstalled. Any desktop file indexing software needs to be completely off or uninstalled. If you have added lots of this type of crapware to your system you may want to wipe it and do a completely clean Windows 7 SP1 install.

All installed plugins, even ones not from NI and not instantiated in the session need to be checked that they are up to date.

Try creating a brand new empty session. Does this happen there?

Hello,

Just a quick update on the situation. Coming back two days later to the session the problem strangely dissapeared. I guess it is one of those strange issues that show up and sometimes vanish without any reason. Glad it is working for now. Darryl, Thank You very much for Your advice.

I have the exact same problem.
I have a Pro Tools HD3 system and Kontakt 5 AAX is nothing but problems.
Then all a sudden it works. Then all a sudden it doesn't.
I think it's a NI problem.

Many folks are able to get NI software to run reliably, so while it might be an NI issue, it is also quite possible these behaviors are because your system is not properly configured and all the optimization steps done, that somethign like Spotlight indexing or time machine starts up in the background and things go to hell. Or you still have WiFi enabled, etc. You need to go though absolutely everything and try to describe your system in full detail if you want more help. Starting with exact versions of everything installed, a Sandra report, all your playback engine settings, and list all the optimizations done and all the standard debugging steps you have tried.

Pjano: I am not familiar with your abbey road plugin, But I ran into something very similar with very basic projects using a different plug by IK-Multimedia called Philharmonik.

I am going to recommend that you check something in your bios, but experiment a little with this. I am NOT any sort of techsupport professional in Protools. I am sure there are many DUC'ers that are way more technical and knowledgeable than me.. But when I had your issue occuring in my studio, I went into BIOS and searched for something called "Multithreading" .. This was ON by default. I shut that feature off and bingo! instant success. I can now run multiple VI's where only 1 would push it off the cliff.. (like yours) The thing you will notice is that with multithread off, where you might have had 8 cpu's (virtual) you will cut that in half. I have a i7 950 with multithread off and see no more than 4 cpu's where having it on gave me 8. I have heard opposing theories to this multithreading thing so... turn it off if its on, try your stuff, you wont hurt anything but trying.. if it doesn;t buy you any success, turn it back on..

Good luck..
joe
