Default MBox problem - bad hiss on 1/4" input, but XLR input is ok!(?)

I'm using MBox and if I plug in to the 1/4" input on either channel 1 or 2 I get massive hiss when I try to record. However on either channel the XLR input is just fine. I've tried several 1/4" cables, different instruments, etc. I get the same behavior using either ProTools or Ableton Live. This hiss wasn't always there, I've recorded for years w/ this mbox and this has just started happening, with increasing frequency until now it happens almost all the time. Anyone have any experience with this or suggestions??? The hiss is on the track itself, and so comes through on headphones, monitors, etc.

Thanks!

Paul

I'm not sure what MBox you have, but aren't the RCA's for SPDIF?

Yes, but I'm not using the RCA in/out at all. I have the original flavor of MBox. I've tried a different computer, tried different power outlets, and every permutation of the setup results in the same thing: the 1/4" input being unusable, and the XLR being fine.
