Default Machine control

You haven't really used Pro Tools until you've had a truly horrible and humiliating experience with Machine Control in front of an impatient and unsympathetic client. That is all.

I agree, it sucks. Especially with HDCAMSR decks. Thanks Avid! I want my MicroLynx back.

Machine control sucks is what happened!

For a start, why can't there just be one panel to access instead of about 27!

1. First, go to Peripherals. Select your machine.
2. Go to transport panel, engage "online" button.
3. Toggle transport to be master machine, because when restriping, why would you want PT as master? But that's the default.
4. Go to "session" panel. Select 9-pin serial, because it ALWAYS defaults to something else. Why?
5. Make sure the deck is looking at stable black, has video ref and is not in EE.
6. Press "Apple 6" to bring up deck record panel.
7. Try to remember is it "Auto Record" or "Punch in/out" that works, because one of them surely doesn't.
8. Try to remember the something something backslash while standing on one leg routine that you have to go through if you want to bounce to a track while restriping.

Seriously, 20 years ago I used Fairlight MFX with video decks. There was one button to do all this. One. And it worked every time. And you could scrub with frame accuracy.

9. Oh, and another thing. Hope you don't have to SCRUB WITH FRAME ACCURACY while locked up to the deck, because you can't.

Outstanding Rant!

Machine Control Bites...

Though the fun new practice of "relaying a quicktime" is about as cumbersome...

I gave up and now just feed my rig ltc from the deck, do my punch ins from the deck panel, ugly but reliable. I was a Fairlight guy too and got spoiled by proper 9 pin. Avid, machine control sucks.
