D Command 8 vs 24 fader - survey
Building a new room and trying to decide on the right D-Command surface. We are already going with an Expanded HD3 system with multiple 192s, X-chassis etc . . .
What I want to know is if any of you find working with 24 faders worth it against the basic 8. Is there a real speed increase or are these just marketing faders . . . meaning a bigger surface to impress clients. I have mixed in the box most of my ProTools career and have gotten really fast on the keyboards and macros. I also like the D-Command 8 being so compact that I need not move out of the sweet spot and just bank faders. Mind you a 24 fader is not so big as a D-Control. Also most of the things important to me would be at arms reach . . . dynamics, EQ, smart faders. I could also use the $13K savings to get other things like plug-ins and a nice Argosy desk. What do other people think here. I am sure there are a lot of 24 fader D-Command users out there as I see it is the most popular model sold. Do you find yourself using all 24 faders? While more faders are great when setting up a rough mix, like most things banking allows you to write all your mix automation and level changes quickly with the 4 left faders. At least that is how I work. Thanks . . . |

Re: D Command 8 vs 24 fader - survey
We're doing mostly audio post on our 8-fader D-Commands. In a perfect world, I'd love to have the extra faders just to save that couple of seconds of bank switching, but when I look at the $$ required...I think I'll stick with the 8-fader for now.

Re: D Command 8 vs 24 fader - survey
I have one with 24 faders but to be honest it wouldn't kill me to work with 8. I had an insane budget through the school where I work so it wasn't an issue but if you are trying to stretch your dollar you can get by, and be most happy and funtional, with 8.

Re: D Command 8 vs 24 fader - survey
Hi,
I have personally worked with both solutions and settled for the extra fader pack in my setup. I feel that a 24 faders makes it much easier for me to get a clear view of the session when I have a lot of tracks. And for me the size of the 24 channel unit is perfect, since I am able to reach everything from the sweet spot. I also feel that this setup eases my workflow when I turn off the screen and only work with the D-Command and my monitors. Good luck!

Re: D Command 8 vs 24 fader - survey
Thank you guys . . . great help. Well so that is it . . . 8 faders would be my goal, but if we can afford it 24 faders.
Anyone else feel free to chime in. But these comments really answer my question. |
