Default Fat32 and mac (?)

I currently have a Lacie external hard drive for storing and recording. It came as Fat32 formatted. Is that ok ? (it seems to do fine) How will it be different if I format it with my mac ? And will my pc be able to read it then ?

What is the ideal way to set up your hard drive for protools on mac ? (and why ?)
