Avid just advertised 3 days ago for senior software engineers (1 senior and two principal engineers) for its digidesign subsidiary. Here's the job description. Anyone care to speculate what happened?


OB DESCRIPTION:

You will work with a team of engineers in developing, debugging, and optimizing real-time digital audio workstation software on Windows and MacOS X operating systems. The specific technology areas that the team focuses on include real-time data streaming, multi-threaded digital audio signal routing and mixing, message-based data movement systems such as MIDI, file I/O performance tuning, and other complex systems programming and debugging tasks.

Job Functions:

* Develop audio engine software for Digidesign*s Pro Tools line of digital audio workstation products.

* Collaborate with other engineers delivering high quality products on schedule.

* Continually improve product quality working with the Engineering Testing Services department.

* Create test strategies that ensure existing and new code is released defect free.

Essential Requirements:

* 5 years experience with C in large complex code bases

* Strong debugging skills

* Ability to understand and work with large systems

* Windows XP and/or Macintosh OS X platform programming experience

* Highly motivated and energetic

Preferred:

* Multi-threaded real-time systems programming experience

* Kernel mode driver experience

* Multimedia and audio experience

I'm happy to see this if it's true (there is no link) because of the strategy implications. They are remaining on general purpose operating systems rather than bailing on them as some have speculated (i.e. the idea was they would do a RADAR-like product with a hidden OS).

Yes there may have been key people who walked out, which would be disturbing. Everyone's options are probably deep underwater and the view from in there might not be so cheery. But maybe they are just staffing up since the new core architecture has probably settled down and they need more hands to whack bugs.

They could simply be adding staff for recoding for Snow Leopard too.
