Doing a lot of reading in this tread as well as a few others. What is the consensus on which drive to run pro tools on?
1) Same drive as the operating system? 2) Separate drive with samples/libraries, vst's, etc? I read where a few people was saying they do not run pro tools on the same drive as the os. As far as M.2 storage, ssd, and hdd drives are concerned. |

For best performance, use three drives:
1. OS and program installs 2. Pro Tools session data 3. VI sample libraries Three Samsung Evo 850 SSDs would be great.

Yes this is what i was thinking. I was confused on the application and sessions. Operating system, Pro tools on drive 1, drive 2 pro tools sessions and sample libraries, drive 3 recording. |

Drive 1. Would be OS with applications and plug-ins. Should the the default location for all installers. Drive 2. Would be for the sessions and audio files. Keep each session and associated audio in the same folder. With a separate folder for each song. I actually organize my recording drive by artist/album/song. Don't try to keep sessions on one drive and audio on another. That gets messy in a hurry. Drive 3. Would be for sample libraries. This is one thing you'll probably need to pay attention to when installing. You'll want the actual VI to still install on the OS drive. But there should be an option on where to install the "content/library". If not there is usually a way to move it later. Just read up, as different plug-in developers do it differently.

And, to be clear, Drive 1/the Operating System and Programs drive must be Drive "C:"

I strongly suggest using two system drives if you don't use a laptop. Rebooting into a second system SSD is stupid fast when something goes wrong.

Thanks for all the recent replies!
I'm currently running Pro Tools 12 on a windows 7 professional 64bit system. Is this the best OS for Pro Tools at the moment? I'm not really liking windows 10, but if its better overall for pro tools I'll go with it. |

I'm running PT12.5.1 on a well tuned almost 6 year old laptop running Windows 7. The thing that I have noticed is the biggest draw back to running on Win7 is that the PT Control app on the iPad doesn't work with PT12.5.1 on Windows 7. And that it requires Windows 10 to be fully functional.

Hi,
we just installed a new hdx system and having trouble getting it into a productive system. AAE errors -9171 appearing randomly. Specs are as follows: Intel Core i7 6850K Asus ROG Rampage V Extreme/U3.1 Intel X99 EVGA GeForce GTX 1070 Founders Edition 256GB Samsung 950 Pro M.2 2 x 16GB Crucial Ballistix Sport LT DDR4-2400 DIMM CL16 Single Avid HDX 16x16 analog with Sync HD Pro Tools HD 12.5.2 Blackmagic Decklink SDI 4K Is there anyone with a similar system that is working properly? Any hints? Followed all optimization guidelines, turbo mode off, c-state off, etc. We're really struggled. Avid support just refers to the qualified pre-configured computers from HP and says that our system is not in the supported list. ![]() Thanks |
