Dialog track breakdown?

I'm curious to see what others do out there in terms of breaking down the dialog tracks of different characters. And perhaps what industry procedures are. In terms of a narrative film, are all characters given their own dialog track(or set of tracks in the case of multiple mics)? Just the main characters? Are minor characters also assigned to thier own tracks or combined?

What occurs in terms of premixes?

All thoughts appreciated.

Thanks Eric. I posted that thread orig. so I should have remebered that's where I had read something like that.

How would dialog predubs be handled? How many tracks is it usual to mix the dialogues down to?

Considering you are using ProTools with "unlimited" tracks, it is not necessary, and actually preferable not to combine any of your dialog tracks in the pre-dub. Dialog is the heart and soul of your film - keep it all seperated and well labelled - the mixer will thank you.
