Default Importing Tracks - Takes AGES

I was wondering whether anyone else has this issue:

I am working in a fairly busy session, 161 voices allocated (out of 192), a bunch of EQ and verbs on some tracks - but I'm on an HD3 and I am no way near maxed out.

I go to import one mono track (with no plugs) from a different session (one that has exactly the same I/O) - and PT takes literally 9 minutes to do this.

Funnily enough I have an old system drive, and when I go back to PT 8, there is no problem at all doing the same thing in the same session - maybe a 15 second wait.

Is this a bug, and has anyone else noticed it?

After I post this, I will re-boot (because PT has crashed), and do the usual fault finding things, as well as deleting all plugs apart form Avid ones, to see if this makes a difference.

I'm running a MacPro Nehalem 2.26 x 2, with 12Gb RAM, HD3, 192 and SYNC I/O

Ok,

So ditched prefs etc etc.

Launched protools with bare minimum of plugs (stereo and surround mixer, AIR plugs)

Time taken to import mono track - 3m40s (ok so maybe 9 minutes in my previous post was slightly exagerrated ;-))

I then put all my plugs back in and re-launched protools - still 3m40s to import track.

I do this in PT 8 and it takes a matter of seconds (and I have never before had an issue).

Does ProTools 9 allocate resources to the TDM chips differently to 8?

Hi,

I get a similar thing with PT9. even importing one track with just regions selected and nothing else it still spends quite a while updating the i/o setup and takes much longer than it did with PT8 which was instant and didn't do the i/o updating routine, which seems pointless as i'm not importing any i/o or buss/send settings.

Do you have any network drives mounted or Airport turned on? If so, try turning off Airport and unmounting the network drives - does the import go faster?

Hi Digi,

No network drives attached, but did have Airport on. However, turning it off made no difference to the import time.

Interestingly though, I have 1 instance of Altiverb RTAS on a stereo track. With that plug-in taken off, the import track time goes down from 5m24s (yes five minutes!) to 2m15s - intriguing!

Any ideas??

Wow. No ideas at the moment, but let me see if I can dig anything up.

Have you reported this to AudioEase?

No I haven't yet, although it doesn't occur in PT 8, which makes me think its a ProTools symptom, not an Altiverb one.

Also, 3 minutes to import one track is still one hell of a long time (especially on the mix stage).

I will like to do some more investigating into this issue, and when I finish my current job (end of next week), then I'll try and narrow down what it is that is really causing protools the problem, and just how bad it can get.

Laters......

Can you tell me which exact version of Altiverb you're using and if you're using the RTAS or TDM version?

Hi Digitech.

I'm using version 6.3.5, and it's a TDM plug, but in this case I was using it as an RTAS on a stereo track.

If you want I can send you over the PT session to have a look at?

James
