Default Dont Use PCI card mounted NVMe drives w/HDX

Hi fellow HDX users,
After quite a bit of trouble shooting Ive discovered that HDX/ and current PT software does not like sharing a PCI bus with PCI mounted NVMe drives in expansion chassis.

I was getting constant -9171 errors if I tried saving on the fly, like Ive done for decades.

After tons of trouble shooting, I contacted Sonnet Tech, and they confirmed that its a known issue that they informed Avid about.

The offered solution was moving the PCI drive card to another chassis and TB4 port, or go with one of those small, unpowered dongle enclosures and a fresh port.

going to try a few options next week.

So if you too have drives like this in an expansion chassis, and getting odd errors, this would be the first place id check.

Best,
Sean

This is a problem with a chassis only. Your global concern is incorrect as the subject. You might want to narrow that scope down.

Works just fine in a Mac Pro 5,1 or a 7,1. Plenty of people have been using them for years.

sorry?
I mentioned sonnet tech and expansion chassis and NVMe drives.
My apologies, If that was not clear enough.

I will edit my post.

Could it be Sonnet M.2 4x4 related?

I have a Sonnet Echo III with an OWC 4m2 and a Highpoint SSD7505 Hardware RAID card in the same chassis as an HDX card.

I am not getting any -9171 errors.

Good question.
I tried the Startech card as well, and got the same errors.

Are you writing your sessions to the raid setup, or is that just a backup?

What size drives are you using?

Thanks for the info

The RAID card is my main audio drive, so I am writing to it all the time.
I am using 4x2TB in RAID 1+0.
The OWC card has 4x 2TB drives a JBOD, my samples, VI, orchestral libraries.

The drives are Samsung 980 Pro in the RAID card and 970 Evo in the OWC card.

I've just installed a WD_BLACK 4TB SN850X NVMe with a
OWC Accelsior 1M2 M.2 SSD to PCIe 4.0 Adapter Card to my Sonnet Echo Express III along side an HDX card and cannot get a session running on it.

I immediately get an AAE 2 error.

Can confirm I went through this troubleshoot when I bought my HDX rack-mount chassis.

My solution was to put nvme drives into an external OWC 4M2 thunderbolt chassis and run them both on different thunderbolt busses, haven't had an issue since.

thanks for the info.

Agreed, once I put the PCI / NVMe card in a different expansion chassis, all of the errors/ issues went away.

Very disappointing that Avid was told this by Sonnet, but that info was never shared with users.

thanks for sharing.

I went with another Sonnet product, their Break Away GPU box, its work well.

If you have just the one drive, this might be your best fix.
