why do I need a D2A Converter???
Hey guys,
I'm trying to get my studio up and running, I have the 002, with a Digimax 8 Channel Pre, and I hear all these thing about needing good converters. I'm confused on this, I looked at the apogee converters, and they all seem to have a serial conection on the baqck panel labeled 1-5 and another labled 6-10 or something like that, any way, why do I need one of these? what do they hook up to? where in the audio path do they go? can I use it with the digimax LT? I"m really confused. Thanks for your help |

Re: why do I need a D2A Converter???
The converters in an 002 are OK. The Apogee converters are better with a better clock. There's no requirement to buy an A/D converter, the 002 will work fine by itself. The Apogee is an upgrade. The ports you see on the back are probably ADAT optical ports. The 002 has the same.
A bigger improvement is a decent mic, followed by a decent mic-preamp, then a converter. If your all virtual ie: Reason, then the converter is a good upgrade first. Good luck

Re: why do I need a D2A Converter???
Right now you have very nice AD-conversion and clock. The Digimax is wellknown for it (so i've herad; never use the digimax myself). Better DA will give you better conversion when you use outboad equipment after you recorded into protools. If you do everything in the box, then better DA will make it possible for you to hear better what you are doing. I myself have the 001, and my DA was a HUGE upgrade, but i understand the 002 and 002R are better, so the upgrade wont be that much, but still a nice addition. Especially with the 002/002r, dont get a cheap DA. Get a good one. A cheap one will not be better as the interface you have right now. The Benchmark DAC-1 seems to be very nice for the money. It even has a volume control......wich is more important as you think

Re: why do I need a D2A Converter???
which makes me curious - 16 channels balanced wouldn't work in 25 pins.

Re: why do I need a D2A Converter???
Tele,
One connector is 8 balanced line ins OR out. What I've told him was : " It's probably the D-sub 25 pin balanced audio I/O, found on the Rosetta800. And it should be labeled as 1-8 IN & 1-8 OUT." The Rosetta800 is 8/8. Those are the same pin outs ( I think ) as the Tascam DA-xx protocol Isn't it ?? cheers,
