Default simultaneous use of plug-ins. how to improve it?

i'm using 600 MG memory allocation on ProTools 5.1,
still plugins won't let me go on with the session after i've used 5 or 6 of them. Should i get more memory into the system ?

How fast is your processor? That'l make the biggest difference.

Also, what types of plugins are you using?

RealVerb and the +L1 are what's getting you. There's really nothing you can do about it, cause they're really processor intensive plugs.

Remember, in RTAS the processor of your Mac is what powers them. You might have 1GHz worth of power theoretically, but ProTools only uses one of those processors so you're down to 500MHz. This is why the 001 is $700, yet a Mix or MixPlus system, where processing is done on a seperate card or cards, is in the thousands. You get what you pay for.

That said...when PT6 comes out for OSX, you should be able to double your processing power right away. Albeit with the price of upgrades for PT6 and every plug in you own.

Cheaper alternative: Use the plug-ins in real-time and get the settings you want. Then save them as presets, and process each region or track with the AudioSuite version of the plug-in. Granted, you're married to the result and you can't automate the plug-in effects, but you'll also save processing power.

I did that till I got my Dual 1GHz Mac a few months ago (up from a 400MHz). Now I don't have quite so many processing issues. But the bottom line is that Waves plug-ins, especially the reverbs and limiters, are very processor intensive.

I think when he said "audiosuite" he meant recording the effected plugin onto its own track so when you play it back it doesn't take up DSP horsepower to process.

How many RealVerbs are you running specifically? Are you using them as inserts on individual tracks or using them on aux sends over a number of tracks?

Also, where are you using the L1? I'd generally hold off on that until mastering.

AUDIOSUITE,,some plugins have a second version of them selves,,if you look at the top of a PT Session you will see the menue on the tool bar its about three in after FILE,,EDIT,,AUDIOSUITE,,this version of the pluggin will write over the region you use it on,,you can choose for it to make a copy of the region and put the original file in the playlist and the prosessed one into the session,,thing is,,not all pluggins have an AUDIOSUITE version,,REALVERB is one of them,,in this case what i do is use TWO of them,,one with a plate,,and one with a room,,and i put them on seperate AUX tracks and buss any tracks that i want to have reverb on to them,,also,,if you dont want to have a big reverb sound,,try replacing some VERB's with a fast slap/delay,,theres nothing that will kill a good session quicker that reverb all over every were,,

Yeah Sunny Sunny, these guys explained audiosuite, also if your worried about permanently replacing the whole track file, make a duplicate of it before you process it in audiosuite
