7.4 will not launch...IE8 not installed

This problem has exactly the same symtoms (I've been through it...couldn't get IE8 out of my PC...finally bought a new one!) as the IE8 situation; click on the icon, hour glass....nothing. The PT's exe appears in the task manager but it does not launch. The problem started after I installed trial versions of Abobe CS4 Premiere & Photoshop. Is there a known conflict between these Adobe products and PT's? I uninstalled both programs, did everything else I could think of but no luck.
I am on a PC, XP, IE6.

P.S. Is there any wat that IE8 could creep in without being noticed?? How's that for paranoia??

Might wanna put a little more info on your system out there.... You have USB hard drives, or firewire?

I'm pretty much illiterate when it comes to the computer end of things....but I have been using PT's for around 7 yrs. It is a Firewire Mbox 2 Pro. What other info should I include? The PC is new basically new...August...so I'm sure I can find specs on my reciept.
