Default pro tools 2021 : add mp3

Hi all,

i am not very familiar with that new PT version so i noticed that we could add mp3 when bouncing to disk.

Let's say i am bouncing at original sample rate (24/96) and i click add mp3.
Will pro tools apply dithering ?

Normally i am using the L2 so if i want to bounce at original sample rate i would have the following settings :

quantize : 24 bits
dither : none
shaping ultra

before if i wanted to make mp3 i would have the following L2 settings :
quantize : 16 bits
dither : Type 1
shaping ultra

but now i am wondering what to do with this new pro tools version

From the Reference Guide:
Bouncing to disk does not apply dither when reducing bit depth. To apply dither when bouncing to disk, you should insert a dither plug-in as the last processor in the signal path on a Master Fader assigned to the Mix Source audio output path.

It's my understanding that you don't need to add dither to an MP3.

Adding 16-bit dither to an MP3 is actually a good idea since most players truncate to sixteen bits.

MP3 is done after WAV bounce, so either you have or have not added dither but the process of "adding" MP3 comes after your lossless deliverable is bounced.

You can bounce directly to MP3.

Are you implying that PT (if you choose to bounce directly to MP3) is first bouncing to WAV, then converting the file to MP3 and automatically deleting the WAV file?

Is this documented anywhere?

Does this also apply to exporting a clip as an MP3 or just when bouncing?

That I do not know, but creating .mp3 is offliad process that haopens after bouncing lossless. It is not streaming like Sonnox ProCodec.
