pod xt live
is there a way to turn the preamp off on the pod and just use the effects and direct recording... exanple: sending a tube preamp like the marshalljmp1 or mesa boogie recording preamp through the pod and using the effects and cab simulator without the pod pre coloring the marshall or mesa.

It certainly can be done with a Pod XT Pro. Either by choosing the "no amp" setting, or using a tube preamp model. I don't really know about the Pod Live.
