Default 9073 Error - New DAW Computer Quad Xeon 2.83 Ghz.

Forum Members and Digi Tech,

I am using Pro Tools 8 on Windows XP and using an MBOX 2. I have searched here for 9073 errors and nothing helps.

I get the 9073 error when I record a mic'd guitar loud. It can happen 30 seconds into a recording attempt or 2 minutes - length of time doesn't matter. And I only get the error when I'm recording. And there are a couple of existing tracks I am listening to while playing the guitar (A drum track pulled in from drums on demand and an acoustic track I did on a Zoom H4).

I am recording to a fresh, internal (non-system) "E" drive that has a capacity of 500 gig and I have used only 16 gig on it. It is literally brand new so I don't see any way it could be a de-frag or limited space issue. And I also have 4 gigs of ram. This computer was built specifically as a Pro Tools DAW from Three River Sound and that is all it is used for. In fact, the "C" drive is also 500 gigs and only 21 gigs have been used on it also.

I have tried numerous iterations on that Hardware setup screen in pro tools - 256 samples - 1 through 4 processors, 85% - Doesn't matter - I still get the error. Any ideas on these settings would be helpful after you look at my specs below.

The bells and whistles in Pro Tools are nice, but they are worthless if you can't record. My intent was to upgrade to a digi 003, but I am stalling on buying it because I can't get the software to work, and I am seriously looking at other options like Sonar. I just wanted to give it one last effort here on the forums before moving on and taking this cost on the chin.

How would you go about figuring this one out? I have also downloaded and performed the Sandra report and it is pasted below if it helps.

I would appreciate any help you can provide.

Thanks.

Here's something from the answer base, but it may not be what you want to hear.

Cheers,

Thanks Weed - This is what the link you posted says:

Question: Sessions that previously played fine in 7.4 are encountering 9073 errors in Pro Tools 8 with an Mbox 2 and audio played from SATA drives.

Answer: On certain systems you may see a reduction in the number of total tracks of playback you can get from a SATA drive in Pro Tools 8 vs. Pro Tools 7.x.
The workaround is to split the number of audio tracks between 2 or more drives.
-------------------------------

The only issue is that the 9073 error isn't happening on playback - It is happening during recording a loud guitar. And the loudness has something to do with it, it seems.

Thanks for posting that - anyone have any other ideas?

From the Help Us Help You thread:

First, keep in mind that this is the USER Conference - meaning it's mostly other Pro Tools users that will be answering your questions. While Digidesign Tech Support maintains a presence here, with the hundreds of posts per day here on the DUC, we are unable to chime in on every one. We maintain limited hours of operation here, so many posts are bound to happen when we are not available. If you absolutely need a reply from Digidesign Tech Support directly, please use the Tech Support Request Form

With that said - have you tried any of the suggestions from the General Troubleshooting thread yet, especially disabling wireless, network, etc? Have you tried recording to a different drive, to narrow down if it's a drive issue or not? Was this working at some point and then stopped? Have you done a search of the DUC for 9073 and looked at all the possible solutions already given? Do you have the latest BIOS version for your motherboard?

Yes.

No, the "E" drive is the only other non system drive I have.

No. It seems to be intermittent. If I play very quietly it will record the whole track without a 9073 error. But if I mic the 68 plexi and crank it I will get the error randomly during the record.

Yes. But none of the search results have any information that helps. I thought I was clear in my original post that I had done a search.

Yes. This computer is new.

There are two graphics cards.

Ok, I guess this is a dead subject. My computer meets and exceeds all requirements and it will not run pro tools. Even a $200 portable Zoom H4 can record a track, and it isn't a 7200 RPM hard drive.

I believe this is a known bug by Digi that they cannot repair. The 9073 only happens when I record at high levels. 1.5 minutes into recording it abruptly stops and I get the 9073. That is insane. Can't even record 1 single track.

Are you by any chance running the /3GB switch. With that much video RAM sucking up memory (over a gig), the switch can fail unless you use the USERVA switch with it.

As a footnote I run 2 video cards with PT and have no issues, but they have half the RAM you do. When I ran larger video RAM I had problems.

Removing one video card would be a worthwhile experiment.(to me anyway). I would not be in a rush to blame this all on Digi. I have never seen that error on any of 5 systems I have run over the last 4 years.
