Default Transferring wav from pc to mac

I’m picking up gigs and gigs of files from a windows machine soon. Can I just take my mac formatted firewire drive to them and plug it in. Or do I have to initialize it for dos to make it work on the pc? Because I’m pretty shure the mac will recognise the dos formatted disk.
I have Maclink plus.

(I have tried to search, but I get too many hits on irrelavant topics.)

I would be suprised if the PC could use a FireWire drive (although you can get FireWire cards for a PC)...

Probably the simplest thing is to burn the files onto a CD on the PC and just read them on the mac.

The second simplest is to network the two machines together.

The PC is supposed to have firewire.
This is a pro EMI studio in Oslo, Norway.

gigs and gigs of files will take many CD's.
If you format the FW drive for PC it will work. If the PC does nto have FW the card is $25 at any local Bestbuy.

Hope this is helpful.

Hey there.

Are you sure that a PC formatted firewire drive can be read by the mac? I've tried this before and have had no luck.

I'm running Win 98 on the PC and OS 9.2 on the Mac. Anything I need to do to have this recognize? Any info would be great.

Save me lots and lots of CDs.

Thanks,

Anand Gan

Here's what I do.

I have a 20GB LaCie Pocket Drive. I used the bundled LaCie software (known as Silverlining) to format the drive in MS DOS. I drag and drop via Firewire to the Pocket Drive at home, then drag and drop back via USB onto a PC at work. I can do it the other way round too.

This works well if you regard the Pocket Drive as a storage device only - it won't play a Pro Tools session direct. However, the transfer rate, even with USB, is fast enough not to be an issue. You have to remember to de-mount the drive after transfer, though, or Pro Tools gets confused about where the audio is (since the same audio effectively exists in two places).

So yes - it can be done fairly easily. I'm sure other drives will work too, but I love being able to carry 20GB around in my pocket!

Anything special done when formatting?

I have an external firewire drive formatted for PC that my mac doesn't recognize. I read something in the PT manual about FAT 16 formatting on the PC. Does the MS DOS drive need to be formatted this way to be read by the MAC?

I'm at least relieved to know that it can be done, I've heard so many different stories.

Thanks.

Anand

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Great, Doug!
I have the pocket drive also.
Have you tried it formatted for mac?
Would the PC recognize it?
Anyway, I am more confident now, that it will go OK. Its pretty important to me.
Tanks!
