Default Pro Tools MP 8.0.5 is suddenly annoyingly slow

Hi,
I've been using PT 8 MP for a year or two now, so I'm still a newbie, but know just enough to be pretty dangerous. I recently recorded a live performance, which means big .wav files for a full band without vocalists (piano, acoustic guitar, bass, drums, cello, keyboards). This was done on a laptop, and everything went great. (Go Pro Tools!)

I get the files home, back 'em up and transfer them to my desktop workstation (see details below). Now, I haven't done anything with PT for about a month now, but I open the program up and it is really, really, reaaaalllllyyy slow. I mean, click the icon, go heat up your dinner, eat half of it and come back and wait another couple minutes slow. Annoying, right? Well the confusing part is that nothing else on my computer is slow. I run an assortment of computer intensive programs including the full adobe suite (lightroom, photoshop, illlustrator, premiere, etc.) and often run them at the same time, and have never had a problem. Oh, and I still don't. The only program with an issue, is PT 8 MP. It is so slow, that I often get the windows error "APPHANG" - which as far as I can research, just means that the program isn't responding in a reasonable time frame and windows thinks it has frozen. But, if I wait it out (sometimes up to 30 minutes) it recovers until I make it think again. (Meaning, every click of the mouse takes time for the program to think, whether it's clicking "file" at the top of the screen, or actually trying to edit the sound files...)

I went through the troubleshooting page. I reinstalled the program, updated it to the current version (8.0.5) and nothing has changed. Then I thought it was the size of the wav files for the live performance. So, I chopped them all up and separated them into separate sessions and cleared out all unused regions for each session, etc. Still, the program doesn't speed up. This was never a problem before, and I haven't made any changes to my computer since I built it myself.

I would love to hear some ideas/suggestions as to the root cause of this horrible slowdown.

Thanks in advance!

PSW

Observation: After reinstalling PT, the shortcut icon didn't show up with the PT logo, just the windows "tell me what I am" logo. After updating, still the shortcut doesn't show the PT logo. Maybe that helps you somehow?

My setup: Computer connected to M-audio Fast Track Ultra via USB 2.0 connected to computer directly(not through usb hub) running PT 8 MP 8.0.5

Computer specs:
Windows 7 64-bit Home
AMD 4 core processor (Thuban Black Edition 3.4 GHz)
8 GB RAM
Operating system installed on 120 GB SSD Drive connected via SATA III
All Documents and Settings and programs installed on two 1 GB WD Black 7200 rpm drives in RAID 0 connected by SATA II.

Extra peripherals: Canon Scanner and a USB hub for the random connection of camera or phone.

Troubleshooting Attempted in order from the Sticky:
- PC has plenty of computing power
- Plugins - all original plugins with MP with MP3 added and currently have 14 day trial for DINR
- Hard drive for PT and Windows are separate and both very fast.
- M-Audio Fast Track Ultra drivers are up to date and reinstalled.
- M-Audio Fast Track Ultra connected only via USB for power.
- I have checked the exact same setup (fast track ultra to PC laptop via USB cable) just like it was set up to record the event and it works fine - so the problem exists on the desktop machine.
- Graphics Cards are all ATI
