Just trying to find out if my problem is actually a broken preamp or a normal Avid "issue".
So my Omnis's i/ps all work (mic/line/1/2), all sound fine but are stuck at their lowest gain. Turning up the gain rotary encoder increases the numbers but doesn't affect the gain. Theres no distortion, and the signal is fine I just can't increase the gain. Have tried resetting a few times, but no luck. Hardware or software? If hardware I assume it's a repair job. |

Do I remember correctly that you have to push the GAIN knob(like a button) to assign it to the desired input to adjust? Maybe search youtube and see if there are any tutorials on using the OMNI(that might show something you missed)

Thanks for the reply. I should point out it has been working fine both on P1 & P2, and the rotary encoder for the gain is working fine, but suddenly half way through a session, the actual gain in the unit dropped to it's lowest level and can now not be adjusted for both sides and for any ip (i.e. mic / line / inst).

Sounds bad. Have you contacted avid? My omni is really sensitive to heat. I have to keep my control room extra cold for my omni to clock correctly.

Thanks for the reply. Yes I was hoping it was a software thing that people have had, but from the lack of replies it looks like a hardware gain issue which probably means something has blown on the analogue side of the mic amps. Very tedious. And the next stop is to talk to Avid and arrange a repair.

Hey howardb, I know it's been a LONG time. Any luck with your Omni? Mine has been doing the same thing for about the past 6 months. Stuck in the lowest possible level, the gain number on the display goes up but nothing changes sonically.

Hey Guys. Is this the same problem ? Long time user, but using the Omni Mic inputs for the very first time.... Seems like the gain is extremely low. Have to turn it up to max to get a recording. This can't be right. tried different mics, different cables, card with 48v and dynamic without... Requires max gain and clip gain on the recording to get any volume... Also plugged in a balanced XLR keyboard into the mic, and at full doesn't clip the input... and line & inst dont work... same keyboard with a TRS connection.. inst works but mic & line do not... So interesting that line seems dead with either XLR & TRS connected.. and mic input is way low ..... on both inputs #1 & #2 as well as the rear XLR Connectors..... Any thoughts ? Am I missing something Obvious Here ?

For microphones is the input LED showing Mic? Are you going into the front Combi or rear XLR connector with an XLR connector? (and if using the rear XLR you have to unplug any corresponding front XLR). Are you using a known good balanced XLR cable you have tested elsewhere? What exact Mic? Recording what? Is pad enabled on the Omni or on the Mic? You can always bang out a low level sine wave test signal from Signal Gen on one of the Omni line level outputs and loop back to a Mic input and measure the gain in dB of the mic preamp, this should hopefully be withing a fraction of a dB with the premp setting. Ideally a very quick useful test to see if this is broken or not. |
