Default Broken plug in the headphone input! HELP

Has this ever happened to anyone? The tip of a 1/4 inch adaptor has broken off in the headphone input of my digi 001. It's up there good. Tweezers can't get it out as there's nothing to grab onto. Has anyone had experience removing something like this? Can I open the unit up?

I'd appreciate a quick response. Thanks in advance.

Lemme guess...Sony's...maybe 7506's?

Four words: very thin needlenose pliers.

The sleeve of my Sony 7506s got stuck in my 001 last week. I was fortunately able to use needlenose pliers to get it out. Ironic that this is apparently a common problem (according to Chirs). I'm wondering now what the problem is... I guess its just a cheap 1/4" adapter. I hope that an alternate adapter from RadioShak won't have the same issues... though they don't screw on to the headphone plug. Any ideas on a better replacement?

Sorry I don't have any better advice than the pliers.

Opening that sucker up is going to be an extreme pain in the ass, so whatever you do save that for last. The needle nose plier thing should work. There has to be SOMETHING left to grab onto.

This has happened to me a few times in my career. What you need to do is go to a pro-electronics supply store and get a very very narrow pair of needle nose pliers. They make really thin and pointy versions that work quite nicely. I checked Radio Hack store a number of times but never found any that were thin enough to fit in there.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, and I'll definately be looking for a pair of those extremely thin needle-nose...but before I got a reply here (or got through the labyrinth of Digidesign's phone support) I panicked and brought the unit to a pro audio repair shop. He looked at it and said "Wow, man, you're f**ked." And that's a direct quote. Anyway, my 001 is in the shop tonight, and it's probably going to cost me in excess of $100 to get the damn thing out. This place came highly recommended by a trusted source, so I'm trusting that he's right and it's not a simple matter of just pulling it out with needle-nose pliers. But after reading your responses, I can't help but think I might be getting taken for a little ride...

morryC, I had this same thing happen a couple of months back... I tried the super glue route to no avail. This was off a pair of AKG K240's...

I took it to an audio/music gear store and the tech guy drilled into the tip a little ways with a small bit - stopped the drill and pulled it right out. Charged me $35.

good luck man,

Mike
