Default Mac Mini 5,2 Compatibility With PT

Hey folks. I hope everyone is safe and well during this interesting year.

So, lol, my time machine erased my backup of my original OS that was compatible with my portable setup of Digi 003 Rack and PT8, and so now I have to buy new PT. According to the internet, the latest PT that will work with it is 12.7.1.

My mac mini 5,2(mid 2011) has the following specs:

Model Name: Mac mini
Model Identifier: Macmini5,2
Processor Name: Intel Core i5
Processor Speed: 2.5 GHz
Number of Processors: 1
Total Number of Cores: 2
L2 Cache (per Core): 256 KB
L3 Cache: 3 MB
Memory: 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
OS: High Sierra 10.13.6 (17G14019)
Graphics Card: AMD Radeon HD 6630M 256 MB

and is 95%(lack of RAM capability) compatible according to the specifications listed for PT12, but then when you scroll down to the compatibility chart itself, it shows mac mini 6,2 as the oldest one compatible.

Does anyone know if I can actually use PT 12 on my mac mini 5,2 with only 8GB RAM....?

I'm only recording and mixing vocals for rap music, which uses far far less than anything compared to recording bands and doing post, I figured it'd be fine. I can see adding a SSD hard drive.

Thank you for your assistance.

Thank you for your response. So then according to this page, which doesn’t specify a type of computer, only the OS and PT versions, then my Mac mini 5,2 would be compatible to work? Is that what I should take away from this post? Your help is much appreciated 👌

Yes, you only need to make sure your PT version is compatible with the OS on that list. Do not expect success if your OS is older or newer than specified.

Alright, so I've now gone to the avid store to purchase Pro Tools, and after reading about 20 to 30 different pages, it says that I can only purchase the latest version of PT and that I wouldn't be able to download any older version because I would have had to have owned some sort of upgrade back in Feb 2017 for PT 12.7.1 to even open.

So this leads me to believe that I cannot access 12.7.1 via Avid store, and that I can no longer use my digi 003 rack.

Is this true ?

I use protools 3/20 with oo2,11rack,and they worked fine with the older PTools.

When you have a current license, yes it gives you possibility to run latest software version. However not being able to download old versions is false. There is a thing called Avid Download Center that has every release since 12.6 available, and the current license will authorise all of them. Licenses nowadays have hidden parameter called RELEASE LIMIT which is the date when your Support and Update Plan subscription ends. The license will open any version released on or before that date.

Avid stopped selling reinstatements of those plans last year, but you may still be lucky enough to find an authorised dealer that has old stock of the codes. That would make your existing license current and add 12 months of updates to it. Be sure to buy REINSTATEMENT code, not cheaper RENEWAL code, because you need the former for a license that does not have active support plan. You would then buy the latter before your support plan expires.

Subscription license however, as far as I know, only gives you latest version.
