Hey Mike,

I've been wanting to try it out of curiosity but I'm too busy at the moment. Not sure it'd have much use in Post. Although doing a retro sound design is not that common. Like making a 50s looking film but with modern sound, you could do a 50s looking film with 50s sound? No idea how much it changes the sound though.

Have to agree that we're far too cool to use such things

Ian

My curiosity was aroused as the our music brethren wax lyrical about it - and wondered if it was emperors new clothes - or mandatory on any mixing stage for the sax premix?

More seriously I just wondered if the "gentlemen of a filmic persuasion" would insist their dials went through it? or the music premixes?. Just keeping a beady eye out looking for trends....

cheers

Ian: I´m no big film mixer, but I recently did a short that was shot on super 8.
Ran everything through izotope vinyl to thoroughly crunch it together.

It actually sounded pretty "good". Or maybe "right" is a better word-

Crude but effective. I almost can´t believe they give vinyl away for free.

I´m curious too about how much HEAT would help us.

I tried it and didn't notice much if any difference. The sound we have to deal with is so lo-fi most of the time there isn't much point.

Not sure it would make that much difference.

A great use of "lofi" sound design/ recording was "Black Dynamite". It was lit old, shot old, and mixed old. But it totally worked.
