Default Single Kick sample variations, Any tricks?

I have a song in Protools with some sampled drums and I want to do some variations on the sound of one of the kick samples so it sounds more live. Any thoughts, tricks, or tips on the subject?

You might try isolating the beater slap on a second track, and putting a slow moving flange with low feedback. That way, each hit has a different personality in the treble range without mucking up the low end?

This is a great trick for animating static conga samples too.

It works well on electric piano too, just flanging the tines.
