No extra hardware needed, but no balanced connection either.

Janne, that’s not quite right. Phantom (+) is shared equally across pins 2 and 3 with pin 1 being the return (-). If you use a cable as described, it puts the ribbon more at risk because of a transient when patching or switching phantom on/off. Transients do couple through transformers and these are what permanently throw ribbons out of the gap.

I myself would not risk a ribbon with a custom cable, but every now and then have had to do MacGyver things when running out of cables/adapters. When I do something like this I do it with (cheap) condensers, not anything that costs thousands.

I thank you for commenting though, something like this is obviously not supported by anyone.

I must agree with James on how the voltage is applied. Once again, I doubt you will have an issue, but if the Phantom Blocker gives you peace of mind, by all means, grab one. Another option is to grab a passive mic splitter(Sescom, ProCo, Whirlwind) that has a transformer isolated output and use that(which again, will not pass DC). A splitter will cost about the same, but can also do double-duty.

BTW, if you are wondering why you would ever need a mic splitter, one good use would be to feed a vocal mic into 2 inputs(assigned to 2 separate audio tracks) and set the GAIN lower on one of them. If the singer happens to clip the hotter input/track, you would have unclipped audio on the other track
