Default DVCPROHD 720p50 problem

Hi all,
Normally I work in NTSC, and routinely work with QTs using the DVCPROHD 720p60 codec. AJA Kona Lh with Virtual VTR.

For a new project, shot in PAL, I received a QT that is advertised (in QT) as DVCPROHD 720p50. Still nothing unusual.

What IS unusual about this is that, when I try to load it into VVTR and give it an output assignment, it comes up as "dvhq" rather than the usual "dvhd". VVTR won't take control of the Kona, and so no joy.

What is dvhq, and why does it torment me? :)

Thanks in advance!

Joe

Hi Joe,

Not sure which LH you've got, but the LH/LHe specs say it doesn't actually DO 720p50... only 720p25.

The LHi does... don't know if that's what you've got.

Got it solved!!
Huge thanks to Mark Gilbert at Gallery and Tom Hambleton, aka Minister (who took the time to make me test clips, patiently help me trouble shoot and talk me down off the ledge).

The problem was that I was making my 720p50 output setting in the PAL column in VVTR (which I now know only handles SD PAL), when, since the format is HD, the setting should have been made in the NTSC/HD column. I sent a screenshot of my Video Output Assignments window to Mark and he immediately clued me in.

Tom, you were probably trying to tell me the same thing, right?

Howard, the Kona LH does 720p50 but only if you have the right driver. Thankfully, v6.03 of the Kona driver (which, unlike earlier versions will do 720p50) still works with my G5 and OS10.4.11
Also, big thanks to Dawn at AJA tech support for that!

Now I can work again!!

Hi Joe,

Good to know about the new driver... we have a few of them on Video Edit suites around here, so I'll let the techs at that end know.

Thanks

I was lucky; v6.0.3 is an oldie, there are much more recent updates, but it actually still supported my ancient G5 :)

Yeah, Joe, that's what I meant, make sure you have the right output. I use AJA TV to tell me which type of output, then assign it to the right HD output in VVTR. The driver thing I hadn't thought about.

Amazing what we have to know about video to audio post.....

Have I mentioned that it would be great if AVID finally gets together with AJA so we can use their cards with QT's on board PT's???? Not sure if anyone ever mentioned this, but it sure would be peachy.
